Your RVP is proud to team with the Department of Neighborhoods – City of Seattle, Healthy and Active Rainier Valley Coalition, HomeSight, Rainier Chamber and Seattle Neighborhood Group to present the second annual Bridge to Beach All Valley Earth Day Makeover on Sat., April 24.

The Rainier Valley will be awash with activity and celebration as hundreds of people from neighborhood groups, youth organizations, and businesses participate in a coordinated effort of getting dirty in order to clean up streets, parks, gardens and planting strips.  By the end of the day, our neighborhoods will look better as we celebrate the spring and pay homage to our planet.

During the 2009 Bridge to Beach Makeover, with more than 300 participants, there was a flurry of trash collecting, graffiti removal, flower planting, weeding, mowing and a host of beautification efforts from one end of the Valley to the other.  Anyone can pick a project, such as clearing out a junky briar choked vacant lot or working on a traffic circle that needs tending, just form a team and register by April 7th. Registration form and flyer are attached along with this email.

Bridge to Beach participants can create their own project, or join an already organized team.  To join an already organized team contact the organizers listed below or go here.

The City of Seattle will provide trash grabbers, gloves, trash bags, and garbage pick up to get the jobs done.   Projects can further be enhanced by applying for a Small Sparks grant to help with outreach to neighbors or to plan celebratory event following your accomplishment.  The organizers of the project can help team leaders with the logistics of applying for a Small Sparks grant.

Teams start the day by picking up supplies and a snack at the Rainier Chamber of Commerce office at 5290 Rainier Ave. S. from 8 to 10 am and return there between 2 and 3 pm to see if their  group won a  prize for completing a project that fits one of the following categories:

  • Most Artistic paint out
  • Best Down in the Dirt weeding/planting
  • Greenest Thumb
  • Clean Slate Garbage Pickup
  • Best Traffic circle beautification
  • More than Just a Walk in the Park improvement
  • Most Enthusiastic Community Spirit
  • Largest Volunteer Turnout
  • Most Creative Project
  • Most Innovative Project that inspires a new award category!

All teams will be recognized at your RVP and on Seattle Neighborhood Group’s (SNG) website.  Anyone can sign up here or by calling or emailing Jennifer Duong (206-322-6134/ jennifer@sngi.org) or Yun Pitre (206-386-1924/yun.pitre@seattle.gov).

“That’s how we do it in the South End”

Yeah, we attack the powerless to make us feel like anything but the pathetic little boys we are; Little boys who are unlikely to ever grow up to be real men.
