Businesses like this (and Pawn X-change) profit off the misery of others. It’s either stolen goods sold by criminals or a last option for people in dire straits. It’s really sad.
@Tiffany: What’s wrong with providing a last option for people in dire straits? If you were in a financial bind, wouldn’t you be glad to have that option?
As someone who’s had to sell jewelry to make rent once or twice, I sure am.
Not it’s the scales with springs in the bottom
To rip you off , the ridiculous fees they charge and the blatant dishonesty
Thank you, Matteo – that was what I was getting at. This isn’t benevolence. It’s taking advantage of people with no other options (and, of course, making crime profitable.)
This sponsorship makes me want to stop looking at this website.
It’s good that people have a way to turn their metals into cash, any time any dAy of the week.
But considering banks no longer provide this service what are went do
I have a small stash of scrap gold it’s always good to have go get you out of a bind.
But this industry has been plagued by the less than honest.
Pro tips, know gold and silver prices before you leave the house. you’ll never get market price but it will make the difference between 15% and 8% you pay
Don’t trade nana’s jewels take those to a real jewler
do trade broke and scrap coins
Check out that Seattle crime iPhone app it’s really nice
I still check on around here once in a while
Thank you for your feedback, faithful readers. Please try to understand that your RVP is a struggling business run by real people trying to survive in very tough economic times, and we are simply not in a position to turn down paid advertisers.
We all have to eat…
Goooooooooooooooooooooooal!
Wait, thats soccer.

Last I checked, precious metals were the best form of cash. In fact, it’s better than using fiat paper money because it cannot be diluted into oblivion by central banks. Precious metals are recognized worldwide, in every country, without having to convert to another currency.
Keep your precious metals, folks. If you need fiat paper money to pay bills, then privately sell your metals to folks you know, or sell them online using eBay or Craigslist. Don’t get ripped off by selling them to a business that takes a large percentage profit off every transaction.
If you want to know the spot price of gold or silver at any given moment, consult kitco.com before making a sale, so you know what BUY4GOLD is paying themselves in commissions.
I do believe that a business like this hurts the neighborhood because it gives burglars another reason to break into our homes.
How can a place that gives free balloons to kids be bad?
Dear Bramk,
Your comments are spot on. If people me to buy goods & services in the Rainier Valley, then they need to bring in respectable businesses.
I appreciate that RVP allows commentary on this stuff… Sure, take their money, I’m guessing most readers are wise to their scam and won’t lose money to them.
I do feel like it degrades the rep of RVP a little if somebody came here and saw an ad for them. I don’t know what that costs RVP in monetary terms though.
I’ll know it’s over when we start seeing ads for the Plasma Center.
Dashel, I do agree. This sponsorship does give me a huge pause as to the integrity of RVP. Sorry Amber. I have contacted the attorney firm sponsored on this site, but now I have to say – In our world we support the nourishing people and business. We discourage the negative. Your response is understandable but sad. Sell out the RVP for some Ad $. So to the other paid advertisers, how do you all feel?
@chrisl: In my world as a single mom with two kids to feed, a mortgage to pay, and a publication that has served this community pro bono for three years when no other “real” media outlet would, I don’t have the luxury of turning down $200 for 8 square inches.
More power to you if you do, but please spare me the self righteous lecture.
This conversation alone has generated a huge increase in traffic which benefits every advertiser on the site.
I hear the comments of the editor! Rather than complain about the advertisers, I challenge people to voice, or tap into their networks to bring better businesses in Rainier Valley that are uplifting. You people have a choice – you can vote with you feet and $$ to support businesses that give to the community and work or form a group to attract the businesses that could make a difference. The city officials think we deserve only low income housing and business that caters to them!
@Graham ST: “I do feel like it degrades the rep of RVP a little if somebody came here and saw an ad for them.”
Hopefully less than it would if somebody came here and found us defunct for lack of revenue.
I guess all of these self rightous people have never had to scrape by to pay the bills. You don’t have to patronize said businesses that you don’t approve of. I applaude RVP for standing up. Thanks for all the good reads!
@Editor – Thanks for all you do to support the neighborhood. It is appreciated, and you deserve to be rewarded for your hard work.
That being said, can’t you find a way to continue that work without contributing to the exploitation of the less well-off members of the community? This business and its ilk – the payday lenders, the sub-prime mortgage brokers, etc. – are nothing but con games, preying on people in their times of need. They don’t make our community a better place to live. They make it worse.
Speaking of traffic for advertisers… the link to Salon Vibe is broken… can you get that updated? We love Tracy and want to keep patronizing her business.
As for my issue with the gold buyers… I worry that half of their customers are the folks who are constantly burglarizing houses in my neighborhood.
People need to stop with all this “ruining the intregrity” bs. It’s not like it’s an ad for “Manny’s crack shop”. Look around you, we’re all out here struggling to survive. It takes cash money to churn out all this delightful info. How do you think the RVP became so popular and influential? This editor busts her ass to make sure we all get the unfiltered version of news in our area. When someone is in need of fundraising she is the first to put up a collection plate. Sure we want to see more ads from more local businesses, but they are struggling just like us. So instead of looking down at things why not offer to volunteer to help look for ads? Oh if the ad still bothers you, just cover you’re right eye and go kick rocks!
If 10 of the people who express righteous indignation about the sponsorship of Bux4Gold contributed $25 to the Rainier Valley Post (RVP) for services rendered, the RVP would have $50 more than it accepted for the advertisement from the reviled new sponsor. Goodness knows there are many “free riders” who read the RVP without contributing a cent.
Quick… who just pulled out his/her checkbook or logged on his/her PayPal account in the last 30 seconds? Thought so.
When waving the wand of damn the rich self rightous, who are they to say… Remember, you don’t know me, simply you don’t. So:
I am/was a single mom. Raised three kids, one still at home. I am poor, finacially. I am not self rightous. I have been there and am there. I do not believe the RVP has crossed the line totally, but there is a “slippery slope” here. If this was a politician, a public official, etc, then the RVP would be exposing the possible conflict of interest. The Seattle Times has certainly crossed the line – very biased reporting. I look to the RVP as the shining star in the abyss of our information network.
If a politician, etc said, I have kids to support so it is okay,,,,,,That is scary.
I respect the discussions and the open news on this web site.
So, attack pack, go for my thoughts. But, maybe a word or two will filter through.
@Dashel: Speaking of those “less well-off members of the community”, I would argue that this is less about advocating for the poor and more about advocating for a not-in-my-backyard position. Why? Because I don’t see nearly as much drama over the Gov’s recent threat to cut Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, or our state’s dismal failure in funding schools – especially in our community – or any of the other public policies that serve to keep the poor in a constant state of exploitation. Do you?
@Real Rainier Valley Girl: Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you for your support!
@chrisl: Speaking of slippery slopes, where do we draw this PC line? Bux4Gold is, after all, a legal business, and while it may be distasteful to some, it is useful to others. As are businesses like fast food chains (Should we reject McD’s ads?), corporate banks (Chase ads?), big box stores (Lowe’s?), lawyers (Ken & Jeannie?), purveyors of super fattening & addicting ice cream (Full Tilt?), local bakeries selling $5 hot dog buns (?), etc. Seriously, where does it end?
To all who propose that your news source not take advertising $$’s from businesses that SOMEONE in the community might object to (talk about a slippery slope…);
Consider that it has taken YEARS for news sources with the readership and cred of say…The Wall Street Journal…to even ponder going paid subscription over the Internet.
People talk a big f-ing talk when it comes to the “conflict of interest” inherent in any effort that involves reporting upon the same community one accepts/makes one’s living from in advertising revenue…and I wonder how long the RVP would last if Editor said F all the advertising I’m not gonna be beholden to NONE and expected all your asses to pay for what you read.
Give it a think.
Business is business neighbors, and I’d rather have whatever people think they can do/sell/make/etc. than nothing. In fact, the only thing that makes me both sad and furious is vacancy. I live in the city because I want it all, and I love the RVP because it gives me more, despite my current lack of funding to lend genuine monetary support.
And now I’ll happily go off topic. What I said about vacancy isn’t quite true. It pisses me off when people pave their front yards and park on them, especially when there is PLENTY of parking on the street. Don’t they know its not only un-neighborly, but mostly illegal to park in the front 20 feet from the street? Of course not. Only people like me know that. And don’t even get me started on the impervious surfaces rules.

Ahow, Let me try to remember the right languge.. Ahha- My “sorry ass” does give money to the RVP, as much as I can.
Never thought of my paying (perhaps a pittance compared with other people with more money) as being a “sorry ass” person. Thank you for painting me and all other small contributers to the RVP as, ….. sorry asses. Wow. Does not feel good.
I am one small person who does contribute $’s. And I am friends with a few others who contibute $’s, etc… who are friends with others who contribute and read………
Ahow, perhaps you are branding me a bit harshly.
I will log on no more. Adieu
chrisl
You have “sorry ass” in quotation marks twice and used sorry asses once which is 3 more times than ahow who did not use it once but you won’t see that if you “log in no more”
Sorry Asses are those that complain the RVP or other journalistic endeavors should not continue to accept advertising revenue from sources they deem to be unsightly/unseemly/unworthy while being unwilling/unable to offer the alternative: paid subscription.
This is not about being financially unable to make a contribution. It’s about having dinero to put in your pie hole. And if you have an opinion and wish to air it, that is certainly within the scope of your rights here. I’m just callin’ you out as having voiced an opinion that is inconsistent with reality. That’s in the scope of mine.
And this is also not an official position of the RVP. I’m not a representative of the RVP in any official capacity. Just another commenter/neighbor who has happened to mouth off on the front page here and there.
“Logging off” because an occasional contributor or fellow commenter disagrees with you and slung about a “harsh” label is Weak Ass. That’s different.
I shall be releasing my Ass Dictionary in DVD form, coming soon to a Narnes and Boble near you. I include singalongs. For the kids.

Will that be available through Netflix?
