Does the South-End Need a Dick’s?

KOMO:

It’s news that will have most Seattleites salivating — Dick’s Drive-In is expanding.

The iconic Seattle burger franchise announced Tuesday that for the first time in 36 years, they are going to build a new drive-in. But they haven’t decided yet where they’re going to build it.

That’s where you come in. The company is asking for customers and fans to help select the next location, and it sounds like they are not limited to staying within the Seattle city limits, as the current five franchises sit. Read more.

South Seattle is currently running neck and neck with the North end with 41% of the votes (53129 votes). Vote here NOW!

I understand the nostalgic appeal of Dick’s, and the fact that we want the South End to win any contest (though if you think it would go in Rainier Valley instead of the West Seattle Junction, you’ll be disappointed), but Dick’s is really not something I want coming to our area.

We don’t need another outlet for cheap, unhealthy food in the 98118. We have plenty of those already, and Dick’s can get a pretty rough crowd late at night.

I too thought about the late night crowd issue, but that’s why Dick’s employs off-duty officers to control the closing. Might be the easiest way to get a few more officers in the area without the city needing to pony up for it. If it’s an attractor, it just gives the PD a known place to round up said elements.
And yes, the food isn’t organic lentils and rice, but the 20 or so jobs are good for a fast food place. They pay relatively well, have benefits, and offer a good opportunity for a scholarship for those interested in helping themselves up. Say what you want about the food (although I’m an admitted addict from way back), but it’s a well run business that looks after it’s employees.

I don’t think this area is in the position to be snubbing great businesses such as Dick’s. Aside from great tasting and reasonably priced food, they offer scholarships and great pay to teens who normally wouldn’t get such perks.

Any place that gives money to chi-ren is all right by me.

Business is business, and I say come on down! If it means one less vacant lot, and 20+ jobs, hallelujah, I love you. I will always be in favor of french fries and milkshakes, regardless of health.

Bad for the health. Let the north end have it…

I won’t eat it but I do know a few fellows that gripe about the lack of late-night eats on the way home from the clubs. Might be nice to place it somewhere near the Beacon Pub’s new rumored location in Hillman City.

Put it on the corner of RAS and Henderson, with seats in front of a big plate glass window overlooking the corner. Patrons can pull up for a burger and fries, and do a little ‘block watch’ activity while they eat their meal. I think it’d be a great way to cut down on the crime in that area.

Put it down by the light rail station at Rainier and Martin Luther King. Have an option where to-go burgers can be delivered up or down the light rail line for pickup at any of the stations.

Also have deliver across the skybridge.

It would be so nice to have a real burger joint down here! I am so not into the Jack in the Crack!

I hope the city is open-minded enough to let them have a Drive-In here. We lost a good opportunity for a hospital outpatient clinic because the planning authorities wouldn’t authorize sufficient parking.

I think there are plenty of dicks in the south end already.

heyo!

but seriously, somewhere I could get those cheap delicious milkshakes near my house? I vote for Hillman City as well.

Haters go home! Dick’s is a Seattle institution and an “old school” icon, one of the only original bits of Seattle we have left. The food is fantastic and even health nuts like me eat there once in a while as part of a “balanced” diet. Go south end!!!

Hmmm… I’m liking the idea of Dicks on the triangle across from Lowes where the Chevron, Union 76, Bus Transit Center and Starbucks is! Would help cut down dealing at the Chevron, would be convenient to cars, bus riders, light rail riders and folks on the I90. Got get em Dicks!

Oh and bike riders too. Even the electric kind.

Dick’s has scrubbed all the duplicate votes that were skewing the results. Unfortunately, the North is still leading by a substantial margin. At least we have Pho Bac (3300 Rainier Avenue South).

“We lost a good opportunity for a hospital outpatient clinic because the planning authorities wouldn’t authorize sufficient parking.”

SAY WHAT? I don’t recall reading this in the RVP, and a Google search turned up nothing. Were sick people suppose to take the bus or light rail, bike or walk to this proposed facility? Please explain.
