brightonschool.thumbnailThe community is encouraged to join Seattle Public Schools (SPS) for one of three meetings designed to share information about two important upcoming levies which will be placed before the voters in a special election on Tues., Feb. 9, 2010:

  • The Operations Levy, which renews every three years, represents nearly 25% of Seattle Public Schools’ annual general fund budget and supports basic educational programs not fully funded by the state.
  • The Buildings, Technology and Academics III (BTA III) Capital Levy is placed before the voters every six years and funds hundreds of small renovations and major maintenance projects, technology and academic initiatives.

According to SPS, the purpose of the community meetings is to inform the public, present information and answer questions. Interpreters will be at the meetings for the following languages: Amharic, Cambodian, Chinese, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrigna and Vietnamese.

The south-end meeting is scheduled for Tues., Sept. 22, from 6:30 to 8 pm, at Mercer Middle School (1600 S. Columbian Way) on Beacon Hill.

Seattle Public Schools places levies on the ballot for voter consideration every three years. Planning for the BTA levy began in 2008. Click here for the most recent presentation to the School Board (June 18, 2009), and here for additional background information. More detailed project proposals and information will be shared this fall.

I would encourage all interested parties to check out the following blog (Save Seattle Public Schools), before attending any of these coffees. SPS has been mismanaging funds for at least a decade and some serious questions need answering:
