TRAFFIC ALERT: I-90 Bridge Express Lanes to Be Closed Most of May

i-90Next month, the state plans to shut down the express lanes on the I-90 bridge due to dozens of cracks in the two joints under the westbound lanes and the two under the express lanes, and officials say the closures will snarl traffic in the area.

According to Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), the lanes will close from May 4-23 and July 5-28 while the state spends $8.3 million to replace the four old joints. From the P-I:

The DOT estimates the May express-lane closure will add nearly 20 minutes to an eastbound crossing during the afternoon peak and nearly as much westbound in the morning rush.

Officials expect the July closure of the westbound lanes to add nearly 40 minutes to westbound commutes in the morning, assuming half the 71,000 vehicles that typically take the bridge west then stay away. They say the closure will add nearly half an hour to westbound drives during afternoon peak, again assuming half the normal volume.

Many of those avoiding I-90 will spill over onto every other route across or around Lake Washington, Phelps said. “Don’t just think, ‘I don’t travel on I-90, I’m going to be OK.’” Read more here.

This is a very good reason for people to tune up the bikes and go across the i-90…
