New School Field Day 2008

Looking to get involved? Your RVP’s new Give Page is the only comprehensive listing of volunteer opportunities in the Rainier Valley. Designed to link neighbors with local volunteer opportunities, this is the place to start if you’ve got time and/or financial resources and a desire to help improve your community. Each week, we’ll feature one of the organizations listed.

From the Youth Tutoring Program (YTP), a program of Catholic Community Services:

YTP is opening a new tutoring center in the Lake Washington Apartments in Rainier Beach, and we are in need of volunteer tutors. YTP is a free tutoring program with locations in six public housing communities in Seattle, including three in South Seattle. We serve primarily immigrant and refugee children, helping with homework but also building academic skills to help our students succeed in school.

We are a volunteer-driven program and our students depend on the consistent, one-on-one academic and mentor relationships they develop with our tutors. More.

Columbia Cinema Cinema owner Paul Doyle admits that he’s tired of asking for money, but he’s also desperate to save the South End’s only movie theater.

So earlier this month, when the state ordered him to halt the stock sales that he’d hoped was his ace in the hole, Doyle came up with another idea.

“We’re not asking you to donate money. We’re not asking you to loan us money. But we can ask you to buy something from us. Buying something from us is legal and will save the cinema. We’re selling our seats.”

According to Doyle, the seat sale is going surprisingly well and the cinema is only about one hundred seat sales away from making its goal.

“We will continue to sell through the new year and after as we got a week extension on meeting the  deadline,” he told your RVP. “The people in this community are terrific and they really want to see the cinema survive. That’s very heartening. If the seat orders keep coming in, we’ll be open for another year.”

What do you get for your seat purchase? Nothing really – other than knowing that you helped the cinema out of a massive financial bind. Doyle admits the concept is symbolic.

“You have to leave them and let other people use them,” he said. “But they can still be yours. We’ll even put your name on them if you want.”

Doyle also plans to increase admission from $7 to $9 on January 1, 2011.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse than a 10-year old getting shot in broad daylight on a busy street corner,  it turns out he shot himself while trying to rob another kid.

According to police, the victim in the case is the 17-year old boy – originally detained for questioning – who was confronted and attacked by a group of boys, ages  12, 14 and 15, including the 10-year old originally thought to be the victim, while riding a Metro bus:

The victim in this case was the juvenile male, 17 , officers observed running down Rainier with the backpack.

While on the bus, the group of juveniles confronted the 17-year old and demanded to know where he was from. The 10-year old told him to empty his pockets, causing the victim to believe the group was going to rob him.

The group surrounded the victim on the bus. The victim told detectives that the 10-year old took off a backpack he was wearing. The 10-year old then unzipped the backpack and reached inside as if to retrieve something.

The victim stated that he feared the suspect was reaching for a gun, so he grabbed him in a “bear hug” type hold, to prevent him from grabbing a possible gun. This effectively pinned the backpack between the suspect and the victim. The suspect still had his hand inside the backpack. At some point during the struggle a shot was fired from inside the backpack.

The victim stated at first he believed he had been shot, then quickly realized that the 10-year old had been shot in the arm. Fearing that others in the group might reach in a grab the gun, the victim grabbed the backpack and got off the bus. He was assaulted several times by the group as he was leaving the bus, but able to break away from them and run across South Henderson Street where the officers observed him and took him into custody.

The victim was interviewed and released after being interviewed by detectives. The 10-year old suspect was admitted to Harborview Medical Center. After he is medically released, he will be charged with Investigation of Robbery and a weapons violation.

Brighton Peacock Nabbed! (seattletimes.com):

For more than two months now, Seattle residents Robert and Sasha Stabbert have listened to the intermittent screeches of a peacock.

“It sounds kind of like a child or a woman screaming at the top of her lungs,” Robert Stabbert said. “I’ll be on the telephone 100 feet away from it, and people tell me they can’t hear me.”

The Stabbert family has for the most part enjoyed the presence of the roaming peacock, which has spent its evenings wandering through their alley and backyard. Two-year-old Linnea Stabbert loves its feathers and can imitate the creature’s squawk flawlessly.

But Thursday, after too many nights of loud bird calls, neighbors in the Brighton neighborhood were fed up with the noise and enlisted Stabbert to corral it. Read more.

A fight over money led to a shooting outside of a South Seattle high school last week.

According to a police report, the man targeted in the July 15th shooting had been in a dispute with a friend, who was opening a business in South Seattle. The victim had been assisting his friend in opening up her shop, and she’d offered to pay him $685 for his work, the report says.

farmers_market_5126From Jennifer Duong with Seattle Neighborhood Group:

Happy OCTOBER and Welcome FALL!

Did you know that October is Crime Prevention month? In 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council designated October as Crime Prevention Month to encourage grassroots collaboration efforts to prevent crime in all communities across the nation. The month-long commemoration reflects the adage that prevention pays off.  NCPC  strongly believes that citizen involvement in crime prevention can and has played a vital role in helping many communities stay safe.

For ideas on ways you and your neighbors can celebrate Crime Prevention Month and Halloween together, go here. Other helpful documents include a list of ideas for your local celebration, Playing it Safe on Halloween – Pointers for Parents and a 2009-10 Crime Prevention Month Kit.

I am available to assist you and your neighbors on your projects or celebrations if needed. A reminder, there will be no SRVSP meeting this month instead we will meet every other month, the next meeting will be November 13th, location to be determined.

For more info, contact Jennifer.

Finally a reason to mention Tukwila! RVP photographer Will Austin says the line there to return to Seattle via train is “huge”, so they’re hopping the free shuttle instead.

UPDATE (5:45pm): This just in from Will:

The whole line is busier now than it was this morning. The Tukwila station is amazing! The ride down there is fun and longer than you think. There are some beautiful views of Mt. Rainier, and the station is really cool. There are tons of people there, so we took the free shuttle bus home, which made it a 10-minute trip instead of two hours.

The stations are very well staffed and professional, and the entertainment at the stations was great. Everything seems really well organized and like a big change has come to the area.

UPDATE (6:25pm): This just in from Sound Transit spokesman Bruce Gray:

About 38,000 riders have embraced Link light rail opening day service as of 5 p.m. this afternoon.

Sunny skies and activities at neighborhoods along the line have combined to make a great start of service. Wait times have been minimal, generally in the neighborhood of 15 to 30 minutes with longer wait times at the International District / Chinatown Station and Stadium Station immediately following the FC Sounders soccer match.

Service ends today at 8 p.m. Sunday’s service gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs through 6 p.m. On Monday, regular service starts at 5 a.m.

Stuck in the Elevator from Stardust Cowboy on Vimeo.

beaconWA

The good news, according to RVP photographer Will Austin, is that the waits to ride the new light rail trains are only about 30 minutes, which is a lot less than the hour-and-a-half they were told to expect.

The bad news is that Will and seven-year old son Zane had a scary experience a little more than an hour ago when they were trapped in a Beacon Hill elevator for nearly 10 minutes.

“The front door was about two inches open and wouldn’t close,” he said.

When they did, “I almost got my fingers smashed,” he said. “It was wild.”

The elevator is one of four that take passengers 160-feet down to the tunneled station.

While there was no elevator attendant available, luckily the station architect was there and managed to guide them out to safety.

Look for Will’s exclusive video to be published here soon!
