Casey McNerthney/seattlepi.com:

The teen arrested after a Monday drive-by shooting is a member of the Down Wit’ The Crew gang, a violent South Seattle group that police say is battling Crip gang members for territory, investigators say.

Another teen suspected in a separate [Rainier Valley] shooting last week — 18-year-old Bronzell Bright -- also is a member of Down Wit’ The Crew, and repeatedly yelled the gang name before firing three shots at his victims, police said.

Down Wit’ The Crew is known for previous violent incidents and police documented a feud last fall with the 44 Holly Hoover Crips, another local gang.

About 4:50 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the report of shots fired in the 3800 block of South Thistle Street. Police say an 18-year-old man shot the victim’s home multiple times because he wanted to fight about gang territory. Read more.

Teen charged in last week’s shooting (seattlecrime.com):

Prosecutors have charged 18-year-old Bronzell Jerome Bright with assault and unlawful possession of a firearm following an apparent gang-related shooting in [Rainier Beach] last week.

According to court records, witnesses at the scene of the March 16th shooting told police Bright and a woman pulled up at 51st Ave. and S. Fletcher St. in a Chrysler LeBaron around 4:15 pm. Bright got out of the driver’s side, and yelled “D-Dub, Five-Trey”—a reference to the Down Wit the Crew gang—at an 18-year-old man on the street.

Bright then allegedly pulled out a black handgun, shoved it in the victim’s face, and threatened to shoot him. Read more.

Two teens arrested in Monday afternoon drive-bye (SPD):

On March 21st, at approximately 4:50 PM, South Precinct officers responded to the 3800 Block of South Thistle to investigate a drive by shooting. The victim stated that he had left his house to walk to a friend’s house nearby. Along the way, he was confronted by the suspects. Words were exchanged and the suspects left in a car.

As the victim was returning to his house, he noticed that the same suspects had followed him home. The victim told officers that he was standing on his front porch while he and the suspects continued their heated argument. A witness observed one of the suspects pull a handgun from underneath the car seat. At that point, the victim went inside his house.

Moments later they heard two to three gunshots and the suspect’s car flee the area. Officers arrived quickly and located the suspect car several blocks away. The suspects, 16- and 18-year old males were postively identified and arrested.

Officers recovered several shell casings from the street in front of the victim’s house. Two bullets were also recovered from inside the home. There were no reported injuries.

Gang detectives responded to the scene and will conduct the follow up investigation. The 18-year old was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault and Drive By Shooting. The 16-year old was booked into the Youth Services Center for the same crime.

Ed.’s note: This week’s Comment of the Week is a tie between two responses to a recent incident at Rainier Beach High School in which three security guards were assaulted by a group of men who showed up on the school’s campus looking to confront several girls who witnessed a shooting.

JvA on “Open Thread Thursday: What’s on Your Mind, Neighbors?”:

It’s a sad testament to the extent to which the city has given up on RBHS that the only mainstream news coverage that story has gotten is a link from KIRO to seattlecrime.com.

and

Lou on “Open Thread Thursday: What’s on Your Mind, Neighbors?”:

I went to Southshore and remember this happening once when I was in middle school, except it was only one dude and rumor was he had his weapon out, I only saw him out-running security by a mile as he escaped.

The school was so bad they bulldozed it, then in a stroke of genus built two more schools on the same spot that are now facing the same problems I did. There are too many schools on a bad street, RBHS cannot be moved, but why were the New School and Southlake both put right there?

This is why you should not allow people to make decisions about this neighborhood that weren’t born here or lived here since a very young age.

I don’t want to discredit anyone who recently moved here or has been here for 20 years but, there is a different perspective when you are 12 and on the #7 compared to 30. You understand the appeal, affect and therefore remedy of gangs better when they are all older and bigger than you.

The dialogue that occurs here between friends, neighbors and engaged citizens is one of the features that makes your RVP such a valuable community resource. Your RVP does not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed in the Comment of the Week.

Two injured in back-to-back shootings at Rainier & Henderson in Rainier Beach (SPD):

On March 12th at approximately 12:09 a.m. officers responded to a shooting that occurred at Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson Street.  Preliminary investigation indicates that two groups confronted each other and exchanged words.  Shortly thereafter shots were fired and one subject was hit in the wrist.

SFD medics responded to the scene and transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.  After the shooting the involved parties left the area and no suspect description was provided to investigating officers.

At approximately 1:02 a.m. officers responded to 46th Avenue South and South Henderson Street for reports of a man shot.  Officers located a victim with a gunshot wound to the wrist. The victim was subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that elements of the same two groups that were involved in the previous incident less than an hour earlier met back up and violence erupted a second time. The only suspect information provided to officers was a partial vehicle description: a white Cadillac STS. The suspects/vehicle remain at large.

Gang Unit detectives are actively investigating both shootings.

Undercover Cops Buy Guns, Arrest Four On Beacon Hill (seattlecrime.com):

Seattle police arrested four people at a Beacon Hill apartment building late last month following an undercover investigation into illegal gun sales.

Last month, police records say a “concerned citizen” contacted the South Preinct with information about “suspects were trying to sell several shotguns [and] long guns” out of an apartment on 12th Ave S and S Judkins St.

On February 26th, a member of SPD’s South Precinct Anti-Crime Team called a phone number provided by the informant and spoke with a 39-year-old woman, who told an undercover officer she could broker a deal between officers and her 24-year-old nephew, who was selling two shotguns for $150 a piece.

Police traded phone calls with the woman over the next 24 hours and eventually set up a meeting time at the Beacon Hill apartment building. Read more.

Police seize pot robbers missed in Rainier Beach home invasion (seattlecrime.com):

A group of armed men burst into a South Seattle home last week looking for a big stash of weed, but only made off with a few laptops. Strangely enough, when police showed up to the home, one of the residents was all too happy to show the pot to the cops, who promptly confiscated it.

According to a police report, around 8:00pm on March 4th, a man was downstairs in his home in the 5100 block of S Cloverdale, when his sister came in and said a suspicious person was hanging around the front door of the house.

The man went to the door and talked to the suspicious man, who asked if someone who did not live at the home was inside.

As the victim was explaining to the man that he had the wrong house, two other suspects walked up to the house and forced their way in, breaking the safety chain on the front door. Read more.

A man was injured last night in the second South Rainier Valley shooting in just 24 hours.

Officers responded to 911 calls of shots fired at Rainier Avenue South and South Othello Street at about 11 pm Friday.

According to police, the male victim and two of his friends were standing in a parking lot when they heard five to six gunshots. They were all facing away from the street and immediately jumped a fence at the rear of the lot.

The victim was hit in the buttocks but ran for about a block before sitting down behind a house. Officers located the victim and medics provided treatment before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

No suspect or suspect vehicle description was available and there were no arrests. Gang Unit detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.

About three hours later, an officer on patrol was driving  southbound on Rainier Avenue South when he saw a man lying in the middle of the roadway at South Garden Street:

Preliminary investigation indicates that the 23-year-old male victim was in an argument with a group of suspects sitting in a car in the parking lot of a nearby gas station. The victim was outside the car occupied by the suspects. A female inside the car was heard to shout something at the victim at which point the victim broke out a driver’s side window of the car. Two male suspects exited the vehicle and began assaulting the victim with a baseball bat. The suspects got back inside the car and fled southbound the scene.

Medics responded and treated the victim for non-life-threatening injuries to his head and shoulders. The suspects and suspect vehicle remain at large.

Dear Readers,

This week I watched with pride as President Obama addressed the nation from my Alma mater, the University of Arizona, and implored each of us to use the Tucson tragedy as inspiration to be better:

To be better in our private lives, to be better friends and neighbors and coworkers and parents.

As he spoke, I couldn’t help but think of one particular act of kindness that followed those terrible events of last Saturday. I share it with you because, while it may be overlooked among so many other acts of heroism, I think it illustrates one of the most courageous and even instructive in our efforts at healing our own communities:

The parents of suspect Jared Loughner are also getting support – even from strangers. People have been dropping off cards and flowers at the home of Randy and Amy Loughner Wednesday. One of them was nurse Lisa Campbell, who lives about three miles away and doesn’t know the couple. She brought by a card and flowers. Campbell said in the card were her name and phone number – in case they wanted someone to talk to.

Admittedly, this story probably strikes such a cord with me because, in my own attempts to comprehend such senseless violence, I often shake my head and wonder (like I know many of you do), “Where are the parents? What failure was it of theirs that allowed something so horrible to happen at the hands of their child?”

And those may be perfectly worthy questions, which is why it makes the actions of people like Lisa Campbell (no relation) all the more profound, and timely as we celebrate the life and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who – when he saw suffering – did what he could to help, no matter who it was that needed him or why they were in pain.

So, on the 82nd anniversary of Dr. King’s birthday, may we all have the courage and compassion to do the same in our own communities, with our own neighbors who, at first glance, may not appear to want or even deserve it.

A man was shot twice in the leg shortly early this morning as he sat smoking on a Mt. Baker porch.

South Precinct officers were dispatched to the home in the 1800 Block of 25th Avenue South near South Holgate shortly after midnight where they found the 26-year old male victim with non life-threatening injuries.

Before being transported to Harborview, the victim told officers he was on the porch smoking a cigarette when the suspect got out of a black car and began talking with him.

At some point, the suspect reportedly reached back into the car and pulled out a gun, shooting it at the victim five times.  The victim was struck twice, one round struck the house, and the other two rounds could not be located.

An area search was unsuccessful and there were no arrests. The Gang Unit is investigating.

Another Home Invasion Robbery in the Rainier Valley (seattlecrime.com):

A group of three men burst into a woman’s South Seattle apartment in the middle of the night and robbed her, police say.

Around 12:30am on November 28th, the woman was sleeping in her apartment near Renton Ave S and S Webster St when three men dressed in dark blue clothing crawled in through her front window.

Drug Dealer Gets 20 Years in Mt. Baker Murder (Seattle Times):

Curtiss Ware, 30, shot Melvin Evans during the early morning hours of Aug. 27, 2009, near the corner of Rainier Avenue South and South Byron Street. A witness told officers that he heard Ware curse at Evans and accuse the man of stealing from him. He then saw Ware fire what sounded like five shots as Evans was running away, court charging documents said.

A man who lives near the corner turned over images from a home security camera that showed Ware shooting Evans and driving away in a white pickup. The video was played to the jury, which convicted Ware in October of second-degree murder.

Seattle police were also able to link Ware to the slaying through DNA found on cocaine recovered at the crime scene. More.
