What does it mean to live, work, play, learn and worship in one of the most diverse zip codes in the nation? A group of south-end artists are looking to find out with a community arts project designed to help describe the Rainier Valley.

On Wed., Oct. 5, Southeast Seattle neighbors are invited to participate in “Represent! 98118: A Day in the Life of America’s Most Diverse Zip Code” – organized by award-winning author Nancy Rawles, SPLAB director Paul Nelson and SIFF film programmer Maryna Ajaja:

There are many different ways to participate. If you like to write, perform, or create art, this is an opportunity to add your view and your voice to a collective “portrait” of our zip code. You will also have the opportunity to display the work you create on this secure website or in a business or organization that serves the 98118 zip code. More.

The community is invited to join FirstThursday Seattle on Thur., April 7, at 7 pm, for a town hall meeting with King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg (right) at the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club (4520 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, S.).

From organizer W. Larry Williams:

Mr. Satterberg has agreed to address our members and friends during our monthly meeting in April on all relevant topics including the “wood carver”, John T. Williams decision. And while he will not go into details for legal reasons, he will answer questions about the Seattle School scandal and other questions that you may have regarding the county’s legal system.

This a FREE event and is open to the public. However, we encourage early reservations since this is the first appearance for Mr. Satterberg at FirstThursday Seattle since he decided not to prosecute Officer Birk in the death of John T. Williams.

RSVP to info@firstthursdayseattle, www.firstthursdayseattle.org, facebook.com/events/firstthursdayseattleempower or (206) 280-9941.

Last week, Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) celebrated the grand opening of Tamarack Place – a newly rebuilt, low-income, transit-oriented development just half a block from Columbia City Station.

Construction on Tamarack Place began in September 2009 after an infusion of $3.2 million in stimulus funding and was completed in November 2010. Today, all apartments are occupied by low-income families.

Part of Seattle Housing Authority’s redevelopment of Rainier Vista, Tamarack Place replaces 71 of the original low-income housing units in the original Rainier Vista, serving residents whose incomes are below 30 percent of the Area Median. An additional 12 apartments are available to families earning less than 60 percent of Area Median Income.

The new mixed-use, four-story building offers 7,600 square feet of ground floor retail space and 83 low-income apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms.

From SHA’s press release:

The development of Tamarack Place reflects a transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly design. The building is within walking distance of existing bus lines, it’s steps away from the Columbia City Link light rail station, and it’s close to schools, shopping and community centers. Because of the proximity to the Columbia City light rail station, no parking is available for apartment residents. This factor has not been an impediment to successful leasing.

Residential units feature water-conserving plumbing fixtures in kitchens and baths, Energy Star appliances, high-efficiency lighting fixtures, formaldehyde-free composite wood, low-VOC paints and adhesives and Green Label Plus–certified flooring.

To promote clean air and healthy living, all areas in and around Tamarack Place are designated as nonsmoking.

Commercial tenants on the ground floor include Bananas Grill, Jay Gairson Immigration Law, Wellness Acupuncture Care, Clear Vision – Optometry, Fasika Café (by owners of Awash Restaurant in Columbia City) and the Seattle Housing Authority management office. Businesses will open in the next few months.

Tamarack Place neighbors the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club facility, two parks, a Little League-sized playfield, walking paths and a playground, as well as newly built green homes for sale.

The restaurant has already started serving dinner, with vegan and no-gluten-added options, and drinks from a full bar.  Open for happy hour and dinner Tuesday through Saturday and brunch on the weekends, St. Dames is the brainchild of bar/restaurant and food service veterans and south-end neighbors Sarah Murphy and Amy Weems.

Word on the street is that the vegan mac -n- cheese is “amazing”.

Seattle Times Celebrates Local Seafood with Profile of Rainier Valley’s Mutual Fish: At 8 am, driver Gene Ikeda emerges from the basement of Mutual Fish, his white coveralls tucked into Neoprene boots. He clocks in, as he has for 17 years, with co-workers who file past the cramped office that 96-year-old patriarch Dick Yoshimura shares with his son, Harry, and grandson, Kevin. It’s the start of another long, busy day at the Rainier Valley store that has stood as a seafood mecca since 1965. More. 2335 Rainier Ave. S., 322-4368

Columbia City Bakery Boasts Best Baguette: The Rainier Valley’s own Columbia City Bakery recently won the Seattle Baguette Taste-Off hosted by Wright Eats. Apparently, all but one judge placed it in their top two, and most felt Columbia City’s baguette was the closest to the “ideal baguette texture, with a crisp exterior and a moist, elastic, chewy interior.” YUM! 4865 Rainier Ave. S., 722-9138
