From the Rainier Chamber of Commerce:

We want you to join us in making the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade 2011 bigger and better than ever, so we’re giving you an early heads-up.

With your participation, we can again have a great parade! Invite your talented friends to entertain the Rainier Valley–the more the merrier–at this family friendly event.

And that’s not all! Rainier Ave. (between Brandon & Alaska) will remain open, AKA car-free, to bikes and pedestrians for three more hours of fun during the Summer Streets Party, on Sat., Aug. 20, from 11 am to 12 pm. More.

With 50 entries, last year’s 18th annual Rainier Valley Heritage Parade and Summer Streets Party was nearly twice as large as in previous years. Photos/David Mullarkey Images

The Rainier Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting Seattle Summer Streets with its annual Rainier Heritage Parade on Sat., Aug. 8, when Rainier Avenue South from South Orcas to Alaska Street will be closed to car traffic between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“We are asking every merchant in the festival area to come out in the streets with the parade and festival participants to sell their wares,” said Rainier Chamber executive director Susan Davis. “We expect a few thousand people and want to celebrate the Rainier Valley with a great street party!”

The parade begins at 11 a.m. and will last about an hour. Afterward, each block through Columbia City and Hillman City will host a different theme from music to healthy activities for people to enjoy.

During the event, buses that normally travel Rainier Avenue will be detoured to Martin Luther King at South Orcas and South Alaska streets.

Getting There: Make your trip to this Summer Streets event car-free! Take light rail to the Columbia City station and walk 2 blocks east on S Edmunds Street, or ride Metro’s bus route 7 and exit at South Alaska or South Orcas Street to join the fun.

KIDS: Enter the Rainier Valley Summer Streets Coloring Contest! It’s easy! Just print the official coloring contest entry form, and draw your answer to the question, “What do you like best about the Rainier Valley?” Then drop-off or mail your finished drawing to SEEDArts (5117 Rainier Ave. S.) by Thur., Aug. 6. All submissions will be on display at the Rainier Chamber of Commerce (5290 Rainier Ave. S.) from Aug. 7 through 21, and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, who will be notified by phone. Winning drawings will also be featured right here at your RVP!

heritageparadeFrom Susan Davis, Rainier Chamber of Commerce:

Just one month until the Rainier Valley Heritage Parade and Summer Streets Festival! Mark your calendars for Sat., Aug. 8, when Rainier Avenue will be open to pedestrians from South Orcas to South Alaska Streets. The parade is scheduled for 11 am, followed by the festival from noon to 3 pm.

Rainier Avenue will be sectioned off for different activities that will start in Hillman City and travel north, including Fitness Street, Health & Beauty Street, Art Street, Sustainable Street, Music Street and Restaurant Row in Columbia City. Want to participate in any one of these activities? Contact Susan ASAP.

Join the fun: The parade will have some wonderful entrants this year, and we’d love to make it even better than last year. Find parade application and contract here.

Mini-Workshops: Parade entrants can even strut their stuff after the parade! We are organizing time and locations for mini “workshops” for parade demonstrations.  It will be a good opportunity to teach festival goers how to drum, drill, dance, sing, whatever, with the hope of adding new people to your groups. Interested in running a workshop? Contact Susan ASAP.

Coming soon: Rainier Valley Heritage Festival drawing contest! All drawings received will be displayed at Rainier Chamber office during the Festival. Stay tuned for more information.
