This month, the city plans to start charging Rainier Beach residents $65 to park in front of their own homes.

From the South Seattle Beacon:

This fee, enforced upon residents who live near the Martin Luther King Jr. and South Henderson St. intersection — or Residential Parking Zone 31 (RPZ 31) — will pay for the operating costs of the Henderson light-rail station.

The Henderson light-rail station has not generated the level of riders and revenue needed to operate, according to Sound Transit, since the city doesn’t have park-and-ride lots.

While Sound Transit originally agreed to pay for the cost of building and maintaining the station back when RPZ 31 was created in 2009, according to a letter written by Mayor Mike McGinn this past May, Sound Transit is now refusing to provide the funding. More.

Meanwhile, SDOT is working on a project it says is designed to make paid street parking in neighborhood business districts more available, and has posted an online survey in an effort to gather feedback:

We’d like to get a better sense for business owner needs, understand the customer parking experience, and look for ways to make it better. More.

Go here to take the survey.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) plans to charge more than 200 Rainier Beach households for parking permits to pay for the cost of light rail, which many Rainier Beach residents say does not serve their community. Photo/Rainier Valley Post

Have you seen Mt. Baker jewelry store robbers?

Seattle Police Department (SPD) has released several security camera images of the suspects in Saturday’s jewelry store robbery in Mt. Baker.

Bux 4 Gold – located in the 2300 block of Rainier Avenue South near 23rd Avenue South – was robbed at gunpoint Saturday in a brazen mid-day heist that left the store’s lone employee uninjured, but all of the display cases smashed.

After grabbing cash and jewelry, police say the suspects ran out the north door of the business and fled the area in a gold-colored van.

While an area search revealed the van – previously reported stolen – unoccupied in the 1500 block of Sturgess Avenue South on Beacon Hill, the suspects remain at-large.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mike Magan at 684-5540.

Paving crews from the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) plan to pave Rainier Avenue South between 68th Ave. S. and 72nd Ave. S. in Rainier Beach, near the far southeastern city limits, on Tues., Aug. 9, and Wed., Aug. 10, weather permitting. One lane will remain open in each direction from 7 am to 7 pm.

In addition, drivers should expect lane restrictions between S. Walden St. in Mt. Baker and S. Alaska St. in Columbia City from Wed., Aug. 10, through Fri., Aug. 12, while crews grind and remove the top layer of asphalt pavement.

Then, on Sat., Aug. 13, weather permitting, an SDOT contractor will pave Rainier Ave. S. from S. Genesee St. to S. Alaska St. The remaining roadway sections between S. Genesee and S. Walden streets will be paved on Sat., Aug. 20, and Sat., Aug. 27.

The planned work will take place between 7 am and 6 pm, and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the work zone during construction. Left turns will be restricted at times and there will be loading and parking restrictions. There will be short-term driveway restrictions and some pedestrian detours. Access to all businesses will be maintained.

This project is funded by the Bridging the Gap transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.

Rainier Beach neighbor offers $500 reward for info leading to burglar’s arrest:

Theresa Allender is so fed up with the crime in her Rainier Beach neighborhood that she’s offering a $500 reward to anyone who can offer information leading to the arrest of the man who broke into her house last week.

Allender’s home on Beacon Avenue South has been burglarized three times in the last three years.

“For years this area has had a high crime rate, with most of our neighbors, ourselves included, having been the victims of crime on more than one occasion.” she said.

Just six months ago, while she was home with her baby, someone tried to kick down the front door. Then, last Friday, while the family was out, they succeeded, kicking in the door and  stealing irreplaceable items.

“We have reported the incident to the police who are working on our case,” she said. “But they have limited time and resources.”

In an effort to catch the thief, Allender is sharing a photo of the suspect (top right) captured on her home security system.

“I strongly believe we can send a message by capturing this man and that it is one small step toward making Rainier Beach a safer place to live,” she said.

Shots fired near Filipino Community Center:

On July 30th, at about 4:15 AM, employees at a community center in the 5700 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South reported that a male suspect had fired a gun near the community center and then fled the scene in a car.  South Precinct officers responded and stopped two possible vehicles, one at Rainier Ave. South and South Graham, the other at 46th Avenue South and South Morgan Street.

Witnesses were able to positively identify one of the detained suspects as the person they saw firing the gun.  The actual gun was not located, but three spent 9mm casings were recovered in front of a residence in the 5700 Block of 37th Avenue South, and a box of 44 magnum ammunition was recovered inside the suspect’s car.

No victims were located, and the suspect was arrested and later booked into jail for Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Teen vandals caught burglarizing Kimball Elementary School:

At 7:30 pm on July 31, South Precinct officers responded to a burglary alarm at Kimball Elementary School on Beacon Hill, where they caught two suspects fleeing the building.

According to police, officers later caught a third suspect who had circled back to the school. From SPD:

Officers were able to recover several items of evidence, including walkie-talkies, a hammer, and  four fire extinguishers that had been discharged inside the building, causing extensive damage. The two adult suspects, ages 18 and 19, were later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary and Malicious Mischief. The 15-year old suspect was booked into the Youth Services Center.

From Meghan in Upper Rainier Beach:

Please help us find our lost cat Hank. Hank is a 1 year old, male, orange/white tabby with green eyes and a pink nose. He is approximately 6 pounds, has a small head, with a bit of a belly.

The Rainier Beach Neighborhood Garage Sale is this Sat., July 23. More.

On Wed., July 20, at 6:15 pm, Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church (9656 Waters Ave. S.) will hold  a prayer walk for the 19-year old who was shot and killed in Rainier Beach last Thursday night.

From Rev. Jane Pauw:

Four years ago we hosted a Prayer Walk, beginning and ending at our Peace Garden, in response to the tragic “traffic circle” killing of our neighbor James Paroline. Tomorrow we will once again gather in the garden in response to the shootings last week in our neighborhood in which 19-year-old Tanaya Gilbert was killed and several others wounded. We will stand and walk in solidarity with a community that is hurt, confused and wanting peace. Please join us.

Gilbert and three others were shot last week while sitting in or on two cars parked in the 9600 block of 54th Avenue South. Kenneth Harding, the man police suspect was the shooter, was shot and killed by San Francisco Police on Saturday in an unrelated incident.

UPDATE (7/22/11): From The Seattle Times:

About 40 people held a “prayer walk” Wednesday night through the neighborhood where Tanaya Gilbert was killed a week earlier. They marched 1.3 miles, held a moment of silence at the shooting scene and prayed at two churches.

“We want to make a statement that violence in this community is not the final word,” said organizer the Rev. Jane Pauw, of Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church.

The procession began with a prayer at the church’s “peace garden,” which opened four years ago, after Rainier Beach resident James Paroline was fatally punched at a traffic circle where he was gardening. More.

A 19-year old pregnant woman was killed and three others – including two teenagers – were wounded late Wednesday night in a shooting in Rainier Beach.

According to police, four young people were sitting in or on two cars parked in the 9600 block of 54th Avenue South shortly before 11 pm when the suspect walked up and shot all four of them. He then fled the scene on foot.

In addition, a 16-year old girl was shot in the arm and leg, a 21-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and in a finger, and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Those victims were all transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Crepes on “Happy July 4th: Please Do NOT Call 911 Without a Life-Threatening Emergency”:

Well, we ended up calling 911 five times early this AM. Some 10-15 freaks decided to turn our NewHolly neighborhood into their personal OK-corral for a good 45 minutes, firing their “artillery shells”, “rockets”, and what-not AT each other, using surrounding homes, cars, etc. as shields while scaring and enraging the sh*t out of everyone here. and we’re not talking about tiny bottlerockets or firecrackers… these were the BIG stuff you see exploding in the air everywhere on the 4th… except these were exploding on the ground, around cars, homes, yards, park, etc.

The dialogue that occurs here between friends, neighbors and engaged citizens is one of the features that makes your RVP such a valuable community resource. Your RVP does not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed in the Comment of the Week.
