Looking to get involved? Our Give Page is the only comprehensive listing of volunteer opportunities in the Rainier Valley. Designed to link neighbors with local volunteer opportunities, this is the place to start if you’ve got time and/or financial resources and a desire to help improve your community.

From the Ribbon of Parks Association:

The Othello neighborhood Ribbon of Parks Association is applying for a neighborhood matching fund grant to enhance pedestrian connections between our neighborhood parks and green spaces. The funds we receive from the grant must be matched by volunteer labor.

This grant would be for a small project to gravel muddy footpaths along the Chief Sealth Trail through New Holly. The work will take place over a yet to be determined sunny weekend this summer or fall. It will be outdoor physical labor. We intend to make it fun and community building. We will just need you to bring a shovel and pitch in whatever energy you have.

If you are interested in volunteering for this project, please contact the Ribbon of Parks Association (daphneschneider@comcast.net) with your name, phone number, email address, and the number of hours you can donate.

Thank you!

The Ribbon of Parks Association was formed to create a continuity of green space within the community. At the center of its current focus are three south Rainier Valley parks, including Van Asselt, John C. Little and Othello Park. The group is currently recruiting volunteers to help gravel pathways that have been developed between roads/parking lot and the Chief Sealth Trail. Photo/Dougerino (South-End Scenes flickr group)

Don’t let the creepy poster fool you! This is a great opportunity to meet the men and women of our own South Precinct. From SPD:

Looking to get involved? Your RVP’s new Give Page is the only comprehensive listing of volunteer opportunities in the Rainier Valley. Each week, we’ll feature one of the organizations listed.

Reading With Mentors – located in the NewHolly Family Center – helps interest children in the joy of reading through one-on-one attention, listening to them read, talking about words, and modeling tone and pronunciation. The target population for the program includes children who:

  • Need extra help with the basic mechanics of reading.
  • Would benefit from one-to-one attention from a caring adult.
  • Are advanced readers who need additional reading challenges, or
  • Would benefit from hearing spoken conversational English.

Readers and students select books together that are age-level appropriate and  the student will enjoy. Students and Mentors are also encouraged to spend time talking and developing a relationship. Because students need to build trust, it’s important that we honor our commitments to them by keeping regular schedules.

The ideal mentor should be a voracious reader who is confidently able to assert why reading matters; an observant person who enjoys enhancing the lives of children; someone who takes volunteering commitments very seriously, but can also use humor as a tool; a mature problem-solver who considers setbacks to be a personal challenge, rather than a reason to quit.

Reading With Mentors is a one-year old program sponsored by Atlantic Street Center. With the fall session starting Wed., Sept. 15, the program seeks two to four new mentors who are able to make a minimum four-month commitment. More.

The NewHolly farm stand – located at 42nd South and South Rockery Dr. – is where gardeners living in the NewHolly neighborhoods grow, harvest and market their own fresh produce. It does not get any fresher or more local!

The stand opened on July 7, and runs every Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm until Wed., Sept. 29.

Seattle Market Gardens is a program developed with the community by the City of Seattle P-Patch Community Gardening Program in collaboration with the Seattle Housing Authority and P-Patch Trust.

safeway

The Rainier Valley Post has learned that – after six months of community discussion that started right here – the Othello neighborhood can finally look forward to a much-needed remodel of the sub-standard Safeway store at Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and South Othello Street, including $3 million in improvements such as brand new bakery, wine, meat, seafood and produce sections, wood floors, organics, landscaping and more.

“It will look really good compared to what’s there now,” said Othello Neighborhood Association (ONA) president Jenna Walden. “You won’t even recognize it!”

The fast-tracked project is due to begin in January 2010 and wrap-up just three months later in April, and marks a reversal of the company’s former approach, which seemed to involve letting the store rot – literally – right before the eyes of a disappointed and increasingly irritated community.

The announcement comes less than a month after Seattle-based Othello Partners announced immediate plans to move forward in breaking ground on The Station at Othello Park, 420,000-square-foot mixed-use project across the street from said Safeway. Both properties sit adjacent to the Othello Station on Sound Transit’s new Link Light Rail line, which opens for service this Sat., July 18.

car-accident

From SPD:

[Shortly after 6 pm Wednesday] officers responded to a 911 call of a strong-arm robbery of an elderly woman that occurred in a parking lot at Rainier Avenue South and South College Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that two suspects drove up to the victim in a red and gray Chevy van. Suspect #1, a female in her 20’s, exited the van and grabbed the victim’s purse as the victim was at her car. The suspect struck the victim and knocked her to the ground. The suspect then jumped back into the van’s front passenger seat and the van sped away.

Witnesses called 911 and gave a description of the van and the suspects. A responding officer spotted the suspects near Beacon Avenue South and South Ferdinand Street and began following them. Additional officers converged on the suspects and a traffic stop was initiated at MLK Jr. Way South and South Juneau Street. Suspect #2, a female in her 40’s and the driver of the van, was taken into custody without incident.

car-accident-7

Suspect #1 then jumped into the driver’s seat of the van and sped off southbound on MLK Jr. Way South. Officers gave chase. While failing to pull over for officers, suspect #1 drove onto the curb, struck a tree and ran several red lights at a high rate of speed.

car-accident-5

Suspect #1 attempted (unsuccessfully) to ram a marked patrol car near MLK Jr. Way South and South Graham Street. Suspect #1 then continued on at a high rate of speed and collided with four occupied civilian vehicles at MLK Jr. Way South and South Othello Street. Following those collisions, officers took suspect #1 into custody and recovered the victim’s stolen purse.

car-accident-3

The victim who was robbed and assaulted at the beginning of this incident is a female in her 80’s. She sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene by SFD Medics and released (she declined to be transported). The occupants of the four vehicles struck by the suspects’ van sustained minor injuries and were also treated and released at the scene by SFD Medics.

car-accident-8

While this investigation remains active and on-going, officers will be booking suspect #1 into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery, Investigation of Vehicular Assault, and Investigation of Eluding Police Officers. Suspect #2 was interviewed and released.
