Crepes on “Happy July 4th: Please Do NOT Call 911 Without a Life-Threatening Emergency”:

Well, we ended up calling 911 five times early this AM. Some 10-15 freaks decided to turn our NewHolly neighborhood into their personal OK-corral for a good 45 minutes, firing their “artillery shells”, “rockets”, and what-not AT each other, using surrounding homes, cars, etc. as shields while scaring and enraging the sh*t out of everyone here. and we’re not talking about tiny bottlerockets or firecrackers… these were the BIG stuff you see exploding in the air everywhere on the 4th… except these were exploding on the ground, around cars, homes, yards, park, etc.

The dialogue that occurs here between friends, neighbors and engaged citizens is one of the features that makes your RVP such a valuable community resource. Your RVP does not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed in the Comment of the Week.

The community is invited to join the Lakewood Seward Park Community Club (4916 S. Angeline) at 7 pm this Tues., June 21, for a panel discussion on the City’s controversial plans to redevelop the Mt. Baker Station Area. From the organizers:

The “bow-tie” traffic redesign, making Martin Luther King northbound only in parts, and Rainier Avenue southbound only in parts, will have a huge impact on all of us, regardless of our preferred mode of transportation. We have invited Principal Urban Designer Lyle Bicknell of DPD to our meeting to explain it to us, so we can understand how it will reduce traffic congestion. City mandated outreach didn’t make it to the neighborhoods, so we asked him to come to us.

Also, Allison Schwartz of SDOT has been studying parking patterns in Columbia City since light rail began running, and has listened to Columbia City businesses about how the lack of available parking has impacted their businesses – not only for their customers but for their employees. She’ll let us know what plans there are for change, and you can let her know what you think.

Brian Dougherty of SDOT asked to speak to us so he could explain what traffic calming methods were coming our way, and what bicycle lanes were being added.

Finally, we invited a member of the Citizen’s Transportation Advisory Committee to attend, and we have co-chair Kate Joncas on the panel.

Tomorrow, SouthEast Effective Development (SEED) will debut its new mixed-income development located at 3333 Rainier Avenue South near Mt. Baker.

After closing in 2003 and remaining vacant for the next five years, the old Chubby & Tubby site has been transformed into a five-story, mixed-use building with 58 mixed-income rental units, 10 townhouse units and a roof-top garden with views of downtown Seattle and Mount Rainier.

The south end Chubby & Tubby landmark, an icon in the community for over 50 years, was one of the oldest businesses in Southeast Seattle and was the first Chubby & Tubby site and flagship store. The store was best known for its annual Christmas tree sales, athletic shoes and hard to fine hardware items.

The new development meets several sustainability standards, including WA Evergreen, Enterprise Green Communities, City of Seattle Built Smart and Built Green King County.

SEED hired Bainbridge artist Garth Edwards to create a whimsical, brushed aluminum railing façade for a second floor balcony, ground-level railing and three bicycle racks. A dedication of his work will be held during The Claremont Grand Opening celebration planned for Tues., April 26, at 10 am. Photo/SEED
