Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – Dana Kirkwood-Watts and Seward Park Natural Health:

Seward Park Natural Health is the perfect destination for relaxation, rejuvenation, and rehabilitation, where massage therapist Dana Kirkwood-Watts focuses on injury treatment and prevention, chronic pain and relaxation.

Dana’s motivation to become a massage therapist grew out of her education and her own experience with injuries and rehabilitation as an athlete. Waiting For Superman – Davis Guggenheim’s groundbreaking film analyzing the failures of American public education – is coming to Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club this Thurs., April7, where you can watch and discuss the 2010 documentary with your friends and neighbors. The viewing is free, open to the public and runs from 6 to 9:30 pm:

For a nation that proudly declared it would leave no child behind, America continues to do so at alarming rates. Despite increased spending and politicians’ promises, our buckling public-education system, once the best in the world, routinely forsakes the education of millions of children.

Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education “statistics” have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. As he follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive review of public education, surveying “drop-out factories” and “academic sinkholes,” methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems.

However, embracing the belief that good teachers make good schools, and ultimately questioning the role of unions in maintaining the status quo, Guggenheim offers hope by exploring innovative approaches taken by education reformers and charter schools that have—in reshaping the culture—refused to leave their students behind.

There will be another free viewing of Waiting for Superman on Wed., April 20, at Wellspring Family Services  (1900 S. Rainier Ave.) in Mt. Baker.

Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club is located at 4916 South Angeline Street in Seattle’s Rainier Valley.

In the first analysis of new 2005-2009 Census Block Group data, Remapping Debate has developed an interactive map illustrating segregation right down to the city block level, revealing some otherwise hidden truths not necessarily apparent in the larger geographic areas represented by Census Tracts:

The new maps, available here, highlight areas that remain ultra-white, as well as areas that are disproportionately African-American or Latino or both.

For the map that looks at African-American population, one is able to identify those Census Block Groups that have zero African-Americans, less than 1.0 percent, from 1.0 percent to less than 2.0 percent, and from 2.0 percent to less than 3.0 percent. One can also see those Census Blocks Groups that are 50 percent African-American or more.

In other words, the areas highlighted are those that are have an African-American population no more than one quarter the national population of African-Americans, or an African-American population that is more than four times the national percentage of African-Americans. Go to the maps.

For instance, Map A (left) illustrates what appears to be a relatively diverse Puget Sound region (ironically represented in white) as compared to other areas of the state which are almost exclusively white (represented in red). However, what it doesn’t show is how small an area that so-called diversity is concentrated, which is significantly more apparent in Map B (below center).

Digging even deeper with Map C (above right), which is composed of Seattle zip codes 98118 and 98144, also known as the Rainier Valley, one can see that south-end neighborhoods like Mt. Baker and Seward Park are predominantly white, with a small population (1 to 2 percent represented in pink) of blacks father south on Lake Washington, while Hillman City, Othello and Rainier Beach are more than 50 percent black (represented in gray).

Indeed, one of the key data findings here is that 75 percent of African-Americans in the United States live in only 16 percent of the country’s Census Block Groups.

Ed’s note: To clarify, Remapping Debate has released three interactive maps. The first map looks at African-American populations, the second at Hispanic populations and the third map shows demographic combinations in Census Block Groups that have less than 3.0 percent African-Americans and less than 7.0 percent Latinos, as well as those that have either African-American or Latino population of 50 percent or more.

Last week, according to Maple Leaf Life, assistant police chief Mike Sanford told the Maple Leaf Community Council that crimes like burglary, car prowls and auto theft are “down in every precinct except in south Seattle.”

Indeed, neighborhoods like Othello, New Holly and Lakewood/Seward Park have noticed a spike in those and other more violent crimes.

“Once again we are seeing several neighborhoods that are experiencing a higher than normal rate of car prowls,” wrote South Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon in a recent update to the community. “It is not uncommon for numerous cars in a small geographical area to be prowled in the same short time frame. This is the case at shopping area parking lots, near gathering halls as well as in residential neighborhoods.”

New Holly residents met last week to discuss numerous attempted burglaries and home invasions and have asked for increased patrol, while the Southeast Seattle Crime Prevention Council meets this Wed., Feb. 2, at 7 pm at the SE Seattle Senior Center (4655 S. Holly St.).

The Lakewood/Seward Park neighborhood also plans to meet this Thur., Feb. 3, at 6:30 pm at Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club (50th & Angeline). From Jeannie O’Brien:

Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon and others from the Seattle Police Department will be presenting information on how to protect your home, cars, and other valuables, and will be on hand to answer questions about the recent burglaries and car prowls.

The meeting will also give local block watch captains a chance to get together to share information, to meet one another, and to brainstorm about what we can do as a community to combat crime. If you are interested in starting a block watch on your street, there will be information on hand to help you get started. We hope to build a more comprehensive block watch network in our area, and your participation is the first step.

Meanwhile, a little farther south, the Othello and Rainier Beach neighborhoods saw no less than three shootings and one violent assault last week, with bullets lodged in a neighbor’s home and a popular deli in separate incidents.

Tyberious is a three-year-old black Lab who disappeared yesterday from his home in Seward Park:

He is very sweet and friendly, but just arrived in Seattle after growing up on 300 acres in Northern California, so is not used to cars and lots of people, so he’s a bit shy.

If found, he is very friendly, and will probably be very happy to come in to your home. If so, please email , and we will come get him immediately.

Ty weighs about 60-pounds, is not wearing a collar, but is micro-chipped with current information. He’s also registered with the City, who has been notified that he is lost.

Please contact Alyssa Royse (alyssaroyse@gmail.com) with any information.

UPDATE (1/26/11 @ 3:30 pm): Alyssa reports via Facebook that Tyberius “JUST got back! 5 minutes ago! Because an awesome neighbor called and helped us lure him with her cute puppy. I’ll tell you what, we have met so many of our neighbors and fallen even more in love with our neighborhood in the last 2 days!”

Your RVP publishes lost pet announcements free of charge. Please don’t hesitate to contact us immediately if you or your neighbors lose a pet; with more than 75,000 page hits a month, there is no better way to spread the word in southeast Seattle.
