What does it mean to live, work, play, learn and worship in one of the most diverse zip codes in the nation? A group of south-end artists are looking to find out with a community arts project designed to help describe the Rainier Valley.

On Wed., Oct. 5, Southeast Seattle neighbors are invited to participate in “Represent! 98118: A Day in the Life of America’s Most Diverse Zip Code” – organized by award-winning author Nancy Rawles, SPLAB director Paul Nelson and SIFF film programmer Maryna Ajaja:

The community is invited to join Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) for a public meeting on Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) and Lake Washington this Thur., May 26, 6 to 7:30 pm, at Rainier Beach Library (9125 Rainier Ave. S.). From SPU:

During heavy rains, the combination of stormwater and sewage may exceed the capacity of the system and overflow, causing a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO). Reducing CSOs will protect Lake Washington and make sure Seattle complies with federal and state water quality regulations.

SPU has identified potential CSO reduction projects in your area, including upgrading an existing Pump Station near Pritchard Island Beach Park and constructing a new sewer pipe along 52nd Avenue South & South Henderson Street. Construction of these projects
is planned to begin in 2013- 2014.

The meeting will provide additional information and gives you the opportunity to ask questions. More.

This Sun., May 1, the Rainier Valley will be awash with activity and celebration as hundreds of Southeast Seattle friends and neighbors participate in the third annual Bridge to Beach All Valley Clean Up – a coordinated effort of getting dirty in order to clean up streets, parks, gardens and planting strips in our community. More.

Less than two months after the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced the completion of the majority of work in the Rainier Avenue Corridor construction project that started last summer, the department has announced that construction at the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Genesee Street will begin again next week. From SDOT:

Construction work to repave the Rainier/Genesee intersection is scheduled for April 14-16. The work is expected to take two night shifts (Thursday & Friday) and a day shift (Saturday). The paving is weather dependent. If paving cannot be done on Saturday, April 16th, it will be scheduled for the following Saturday. Work includes grinding asphalt, jack-hammer work, and asphalt paving.

Traffic restrictions at Rainier and Genesee will include temporary bus stop re-locations, partial traffic lane closures and parking restrictions on Rainier and Genesee near the work area. Photo/do communications

One young man was injured Saturday afternoon and four others arrested when a brawl erupted in the south-bound lanes of Rainier Avenue South at Genesee Street.

From a witness who declined to be identified:

I was turning onto Rainier Avenue South at about 2 pm when I saw a group of teenagers hollering and banging on the side of a bus that had stopped to let passengers on/off.  Whoever they were yelling at got off the bus and a huge brawl erupted. The bus driver just drove away leaving the kid to fend for himself. I stopped a little farther up the street to call 911 and when I turned around, the fight had spilled over into the street.

The target of the attack – another teenager – was hit multiple times before falling into the middle of Rainier Ave South. Traffic thankfully stopped. Two of his friends tried to help him, but he wouldn’t budge and he had blood on his face.

Police, Fire, and Ambulance crews arrived within a minute, and the attackers scattered.

According to police, four suspects were captured after a brief chase, identified by the victim, and arrested.

  • PCC (5041 Wilson Ave. S.) Seward Park
  • QFC (2707 Rainer Ave. S.) Mt. Baker
  • Safeway (3820 Rainier Ave. S.) Genesee
  • Safeway (9262 Rainier Ave. S.) Rainier Beach
  • Tullys Coffee (4400 Rainier Ave. S.) Genesee

Girl Scout cookies are $4/box; varieties include the best-selling Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Thank U Berry Munch and Dulce de Leche.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is one of the few youth-oriented programs in the country providing its participants the ability to decide how to direct the proceeds generated through their business activity, whether it’s for a science program, trip, community service project or a unique goal designed by the girls.

All proceeds from the sale of Girl Scout Cookies benefit girls in the local community. In addition to the money earned by the girls, the cookie proceeds fund vital services such as leader training and camp operation, as well as a wide variety of Girl Scout initiatives such as: science, math and technology related educational activities, outreach to underserved communities and unique programs like Girl Scouts Beyond Bars, which addresses the needs of girls of incarcerated mothers.

Donate Girl Scout cookies to homeless families: This year, after much discussion, Troop 2096 decided to collect your donated cookies to homeless families in their community. Troops also collect donated cookies for seniors, food banks, troops stationed overseas and others. Photo/do communications

Construction on the Rainier Avenue South transit corridor improvement project continues this week with bus travel improvements along Rainier Avenue South at South Genesee Street and at Martin Luther King, Jr. Way South. Motorists should expect lane closures and parking restrictions near these work areas.

For instance, the southbound, right turn lane on Rainier at Martin Luther King will remain closed, and an additional southbound lane on Rainier will be closed for a 48-hour period this week to replace concrete panels in the street. Occasionally an additional lane on Rainier and/or a lane on Martin Luther King will be closed for short times. The city expects the work to be complete and all lanes reopened at this location by the end of the month.

At South Genesee Street, the southbound, curb lane of Rainier to both the north and the south of Genesee, and a portion of the sidewalk on to the west side of Rainier to the south of Genesee, will be closed. The contractor will rebuild part of the sidewalk on the west side of Rainier just south of Genesee so water will drain off the sidewalk properly. The contractor expects to complete work at this location by the end of the month. Businesses will remain open.

The Rainier Avenue South transit corridor improvement project includes new pedestrian signals, repainted crosswalks near bus stops, better street lighting, and new concrete curb and sidewalk extensions at bus load zones. Photo/do communications
