Man pleads guilty in slaying of girlfriend, infant (Seattle Times/RVP news partner):

Daniel Hicks, who pleaded guilty Tuesday to killing his girlfriend and their infant daughter, appeared impatient at the stream of questions from the prosecutor and judge about whether he understood what he was doing.

Hicks nodded, answered tersely and repeatedly said that he realized his pleas to two counts of aggravated first-degree murder carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

“You are never getting out,” King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Kristin Richardson told the 31-year-old before he entered the plea. Read more.

Last week, according to Maple Leaf Life, assistant police chief Mike Sanford told the Maple Leaf Community Council that crimes like burglary, car prowls and auto theft are “down in every precinct except in south Seattle.”

Indeed, neighborhoods like Othello, New Holly and Lakewood/Seward Park have noticed a spike in those and other more violent crimes.

“Once again we are seeing several neighborhoods that are experiencing a higher than normal rate of car prowls,” wrote South Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon in a recent update to the community. “It is not uncommon for numerous cars in a small geographical area to be prowled in the same short time frame. This is the case at shopping area parking lots, near gathering halls as well as in residential neighborhoods.”

New Holly residents met last week to discuss numerous attempted burglaries and home invasions and have asked for increased patrol, while the Southeast Seattle Crime Prevention Council meets this Wed., Feb. 2, at 7 pm at the SE Seattle Senior Center (4655 S. Holly St.).

The Lakewood/Seward Park neighborhood also plans to meet this Thur., Feb. 3, at 6:30 pm at Lakewood/Seward Park Community Club (50th & Angeline). From Jeannie O’Brien:

Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon and others from the Seattle Police Department will be presenting information on how to protect your home, cars, and other valuables, and will be on hand to answer questions about the recent burglaries and car prowls.

The meeting will also give local block watch captains a chance to get together to share information, to meet one another, and to brainstorm about what we can do as a community to combat crime. If you are interested in starting a block watch on your street, there will be information on hand to help you get started. We hope to build a more comprehensive block watch network in our area, and your participation is the first step.

Meanwhile, a little farther south, the Othello and Rainier Beach neighborhoods saw no less than three shootings and one violent assault last week, with bullets lodged in a neighbor’s home and a popular deli in separate incidents.

Officers responded to the location and saw one suspect walking in the alley with a flat screen TV and other items. The suspect dropped the TV when he saw the officers and fled on foot. The other suspects then fled out the front of the house.

The 16-year-old male suspect carrying the TV was apprehended near 13th Avenue South and South Nevada Street. A second suspect, a 19-year-old male, was apprehended as he ran from the front of the house. Responding officers recognized a third suspect, a 16-year-old male, who was located and arrested approximately two hours later near Renton Avenue South and South Kenyon Street.

laptopsLast Wednesday afternoon, police stopped a car on Rainier Avenue South containing two young men who Seattle Police Department (SPD) says are known burglary suspects.

When asked about several electronics noticed inside the car, the teens denied ownership of the items, but after further questioning, one of the boys admitted to committing four burglaries in the area, saying that he and others routinely sell their stolen laptops to a computer parts business in the 7600 block of Rainier Avenue South.

The next day, South Precinct detectives seized more than 600 laptops and hundreds of other pieces of electronic equipment when they served a search warrant on the computer parts business, the owner’s home and his storage unit. According to SPD:

The detectives found hundreds of laptop computers lined up on bookshelves, several hundred hard drives along with numerous digital cameras, I-Pods, games systems, cell phones and other electronics. The detectives ran the serial numbers or owner applied numbers on ten of the laptops. Seven of the laptops were reported stolen in area burglaries. The business had no paperwork, receipts or other documentation commonly found in a retail business. The business was secured until the warrant could be amended.

Detectives are cataloging each of the seized items over the next several days. Potential victims are asked to wait at least a week before contacting the unit to see if their property was among the found items.

In an email on Saturday, Community Organizer Yalonda Gill Masundire , who just last week hosted a community meeting with SPD about the rash of burglaries in the area, applauded south precinct officers and neighbors alike:

This is great news and we are very happy to see some progress being made in the right direction. We applaud our South Seattle Police Officers, Capt. Les Liggins, Lt. James Koutsky, Lt. Eric Sano, Detectives, and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Maurice Classen, who is heading up the New Repeat Burglar Initiatve/Anti-Burglary Initiative, who are making strides in investigating, apprehending and prosecuting those who are violating our community.

I would [also] like to thank each of you and our entire community for caring enough to question, share information and show-up to hear and learn how we can build a safer and more livable community.

In case you’re wondering what all the Rainier Beach fuss is about, according to Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) South Precinct, that’s a media helicopter hovering – not King County’s Guardian One.

It seems there’s been “some type of home invasion burglary” at 48th Avenue South and South Fletcher in Rainier Beach, which is less than a mile from the three homes that were burglarized in broad daylight Tuesday on 57th Avenue South between South Fletcher and South Roxbury.

rbburglaries3From Yalonda Gill Masundire, Rainier Beach Community Block Watch

Important Alert!
Please note that there were three homes that were burglarized on Tues., May 19, on 57th Avenue South between Roxbury and Fletcher in the middle of the day. The suspect(s) was not apprehended; however, an alert neighbor was able to call 911 and report a suspicious male of African-American descent in his 20′s and approx. 150 pds outside of the homes that were burglarized.

Important Things to Remember:
In an effort to combat this ongoing problem, it is important to know your neighbors, share contact information, contact 911 if ever you see anything suspicious (don’t hesitate or second guess your instincts), make sure to lock all doors and windows, ask your neighbors who are at home during the day to keep an eye on your property and to report anything strange or anyone lurking around. Consider investing in a home security system and always arm your alarm system when leaving home. In addition, remember to make an inventory list of your personal property (electronic equipment, anything of value, etc.) and make sure to label your items by engraving information on each item that will identify that it is yours.

What Can Be Done?
Next Thur., May 28, at the May Rainier Beach Community Block Watch Meeting, we will discuss how as a community, we can increase our efforts to stamp-out crime and to work together to help address this problem. Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church (9656 Waters Avenue S.) Lower Level at 7pm.
