Have you seen Mt. Baker jewelry store robbers?

Seattle Police Department (SPD) has released several security camera images of the suspects in Saturday’s jewelry store robbery in Mt. Baker.

Bux 4 Gold – located in the 2300 block of Rainier Avenue South near 23rd Avenue South – was robbed at gunpoint Saturday in a brazen mid-day heist that left the store’s lone employee uninjured, but all of the display cases smashed.

After grabbing cash and jewelry, police say the suspects ran out the north door of the business and fled the area in a gold-colored van.

While an area search revealed the van – previously reported stolen – unoccupied in the 1500 block of Sturgess Avenue South on Beacon Hill, the suspects remain at-large.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mike Magan at 684-5540.

Rainier Beach neighbor offers $500 reward for info leading to burglar’s arrest:

Theresa Allender is so fed up with the crime in her Rainier Beach neighborhood that she’s offering a $500 reward to anyone who can offer information leading to the arrest of the man who broke into her house last week.

Allender’s home on Beacon Avenue South has been burglarized three times in the last three years.

“For years this area has had a high crime rate, with most of our neighbors, ourselves included, having been the victims of crime on more than one occasion.” she said.

Just six months ago, while she was home with her baby, someone tried to kick down the front door. Then, last Friday, while the family was out, they succeeded, kicking in the door and  stealing irreplaceable items.

“We have reported the incident to the police who are working on our case,” she said. “But they have limited time and resources.”

In an effort to catch the thief, Allender is sharing a photo of the suspect (top right) captured on her home security system.

“I strongly believe we can send a message by capturing this man and that it is one small step toward making Rainier Beach a safer place to live,” she said.

Shots fired near Filipino Community Center:

On July 30th, at about 4:15 AM, employees at a community center in the 5700 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South reported that a male suspect had fired a gun near the community center and then fled the scene in a car.  South Precinct officers responded and stopped two possible vehicles, one at Rainier Ave. South and South Graham, the other at 46th Avenue South and South Morgan Street.

Witnesses were able to positively identify one of the detained suspects as the person they saw firing the gun.  The actual gun was not located, but three spent 9mm casings were recovered in front of a residence in the 5700 Block of 37th Avenue South, and a box of 44 magnum ammunition was recovered inside the suspect’s car.

No victims were located, and the suspect was arrested and later booked into jail for Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Teen vandals caught burglarizing Kimball Elementary School:

At 7:30 pm on July 31, South Precinct officers responded to a burglary alarm at Kimball Elementary School on Beacon Hill, where they caught two suspects fleeing the building.

According to police, officers later caught a third suspect who had circled back to the school. From SPD:

Officers were able to recover several items of evidence, including walkie-talkies, a hammer, and  four fire extinguishers that had been discharged inside the building, causing extensive damage. The two adult suspects, ages 18 and 19, were later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary and Malicious Mischief. The 15-year old suspect was booked into the Youth Services Center.

Crepes on “Happy July 4th: Please Do NOT Call 911 Without a Life-Threatening Emergency”:

Well, we ended up calling 911 five times early this AM. Some 10-15 freaks decided to turn our NewHolly neighborhood into their personal OK-corral for a good 45 minutes, firing their “artillery shells”, “rockets”, and what-not AT each other, using surrounding homes, cars, etc. as shields while scaring and enraging the sh*t out of everyone here. and we’re not talking about tiny bottlerockets or firecrackers… these were the BIG stuff you see exploding in the air everywhere on the 4th… except these were exploding on the ground, around cars, homes, yards, park, etc.

The dialogue that occurs here between friends, neighbors and engaged citizens is one of the features that makes your RVP such a valuable community resource. Your RVP does not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed in the Comment of the Week.

Pot provider robbed, suspect leaves counterfeit cash at scene (seattlecrime.com):

Police recovered more than $900 worth of counterfeit cash while investigating a medical marijuana robbery in [Mount Baker] last week.

A medical marijuana provider called police around 5:45 pm on June 24th, and said he’d just been ripped off during a sale.

The victim told officers he is “involved in dispensing medical Marijuana to unprivileged patients,” and buys weed from dispensaries so he can give “portions of that marijuana to people who can’t afford it,” apparently for a smaller fee. More.

Lower Beacon Hill homicide investigation closed:

The homicide case of a man who was recently found dead in his lower Beacon Hill home has been closed as it has been determined that he died of natural causes rather than homicidal violence as was originally suspected.

More details on Mt. Baker pot shop robbery (seattlecrime.com):

SPD has released more details about an armed robbery at a [Mount Baker] pot dispensary last week.

According to a police report, around 7:30 p.m. on June 27th, a man in his late teens to early 20s walked into a pot dispensary on Rainer Ave. S. and S. Byron St.—just a few blocks from Franklin High School—and started talking to the clerk.

A second man then appeared at the store’s secure front door, and the clerk went into the back of the store to check his security camera.

As the victim was in the store’s back room looking at security footage, he saw the first suspect walk over to the front door and open it for the second man. More.

File this under wtfdejavu. That’s a new word. It was necessary to create one, give this:

The state auditor is again questioning whether the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle has overcharged Seattle Public Schools — this time for a contract it signed with the school district in December to help African-American students at Cleveland High.

The district approved the $80,000 contract, despite questions it had about the League’s work with the district’s now-defunct small-business program. District officials signed the more recent contract anyway, saying the full scope of concerns was not clear at the time.

Really?! The “full scope” wasn’t clear?! Nice try. Just ‘cuz you say so, doesn’t make it true, Seattle Schools.

A more accurate assessment is that they ignored the full scope of the concerns until it was impossible to do so. But whatever. Let’s hand out another $80k for… oh that’s right, you don’t know what it was for- damn that 1-line billing!

More, from The Seattle Times (RVP news partner):

auditors said monthly invoices submitted for the program lacked detail, with just a one-line description of the work and a lump-sum charge of $8,000. The program, called Urban Scholars, was modeled after a privately funded program run by the Urban League at Garfield High.

Auditors did not name the Urban League, but district officials confirmed that’s the contractor in question.

The district recently canceled the Urban Scholars contract, along with the only other contract it still had with the Urban League, for after-school tutoring services.

And also:

Duggan Harman, the district’s executive director of finance, said the district agreed with the auditor’s concerns about how the Urban League billed for the Urban Scholars program.

He said he believes the program at Cleveland was a good one but that the district ultimately felt the Urban League had misled it about how many students were being helped.

“We made the decision that we didn’t want to do business with them,” Harman said.

It became clear, he said, that the invoices for the Cleveland program included expenses for the separate and privately funded program at Garfield.

At Cleveland, the League served about 30 students.

Sound familiar? The ULMS admitted it used contract money from Seattle Public Schools to “keep the doors open.” Now it seems the Urban League was taking money for 1 group of kids and using it to fund a program for another group of kids. I have to check the rule book, but you might could go to hell for that.

And also, who knows if the Urban Scholars program is effective. Yeah, the adults on the ground working with the kids are passionate, highly qualified and far from the poor decision making at the District or the Urban League, and yeah, the kids are awesome, driven, working hard to create their own paths to success, but whatever, right? Heck, a program like ULS could be a saving grace, but no one cares now.  Not with this kind of residue smeared all over it.

Here’s a question though, which pot of SPS money was used in this latest contract debacle? Inner city… South Seattle… brown kids… hmmmm… Families and Education Levy, anyone?

Man found dead in lower Beacon Hill home

On Monday, a man in his 50s was found dead in his home in the 2000 block of 18th Avenue South on lower Beacon Hill.

According to police, officers were dispatched to check on him after it was reported that he hadn’t been to work for several days. When they arrived, they could see – through a sliding glass door – a man lying on the floor with obvious injuries.

Officers entered the home and confirmed that it was clear of suspects before Seattle Fire Department verified that the victim was dead.

Man critically injured in shooting near Genesee Park

A man was wounded shortly before 2 pm today when he was shot at 49th Avenue South and Lake Washington Boulevard near Genesee Park.

According to Seattle police, the victim – a man in his 20s – was at the park when the suspects arrived, an argument ensued and the man was shot once in the stomach.

The suspects are described as four males, possibly Somalian, who fled northbound on Lake Washington Boulevard South in a white sedan.

The victim was treated at the scene before being transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

An area search was unsuccessful and there were no arrests.

Taxi cab stolen, crashed; suspects arrested

Two men assaulted a taxi driver and tried to steal his cab at about 5:45 am today at Rainier Avenue South and South Rose Street in Rainier Beach.

According to police, the driver stopped to pick up two female fares when two men jumped into the back seat. When the driver got out of the cab to confront the two male suspects, another man jumped into the driver’s seat. When the taxi driver tried to take the keys out of the ignition, one of the suspects punched him twice, then proceeded to crash the cab into the side of an apartment building in the 8100 block of Rainier Avenue South.

All three suspects jumped out of the cab and fled on foot, but responding officers found them nearby in the 4500 block of South Kenyon Street.

The cab driver and the female witnesses all positively identified the three suspects, ages 18, 20 and 21, who were booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery.

Shots fired in Rainier Beach

Shortly before 1 am on Sun., June 20, South Precinct officers responded to the 11800 block of 55th Avenue South in Rainier Beach to investigate reports of several shots fired.

Officers arrived and located a number of shell casings in the roadway, but did not locate any damage or find any reports of any injuries.

According to police, it’s possible that a two-door silver Honda, which fled the area at a high rate of speed, may be involved, but witnesses could not provide any further information.

Armed assault suspect arrested

On Sun., June 12, at 5:27 am, South precinct patrol officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 9000 block of Seward Park Avenue South.

The 22-year old female victim said that she was with a male friend who became angry with her. When she tried to leave with another friend, the suspect followed in his own car and forced them to pull over before getting out of his car, pointing a gun at her and pulling the trigger.

The victim said the gun didn’t fire, so she and her friend drove around him and sped off. She said she thought that she heard one gunshot as they drove away.

Later that day, the victim called 911 to report that the suspect was in the 5900 block of Delridge Way SW in West Seattle.

When they arrived, responding officers arrested the 27-year old suspect without incident. In a search incident to arrest, they discovered a loaded pistol in his pocket. He was subsequently booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Assault and Investigation of Violation of the Uniform Firearms Act.

SWAT situation ends quietly on Beacon Hill

On Sun., June 12, at 10:20 am, South Precinct officers responded to a 911 call of a family argument in the 2800 block of South Graham Street on Beacon Hill.

According to police, family members said that their adult son was off his medication, had fired at least two shots from a .22 caliber rifle inside the house hours before the police were called, and was now barricaded inside his room.

Meanwhile, officers thought they may have heard the suspect loading another weapon, so they ushered all the remaining family members out of the house, and then backed out themselves. Negotiators and the SWAT team were called to the scene to assist.

After ignoring negotiators, the suspect eventually came out of the house, where he was taken into custody without incident. A search of the residence revealed no additional weapons.

Charge: Jail NOT enough to stop domestic violence offender

King County prosecutors claim a Seattle man accused of threatening his ex-girlfriend and a child with a gun kept terrifying his victim – from jail.

Prosecutors claim Jaybe Beaver, Jr., pointed a pistol at the woman during an altercation at a Rainier Valley gas station on May 3. Beaver, 36, was subsequently jailed and charged with assault.

Since then, though, Senior Deputy Prosecutor Thomas Gahan told the court, Beaver conducted “a campaign of witness tampering that continued even after the defendant was booked into custody.” More.

Sex assault charges filed in Beacon Hill attack (seattlepi.com):

A Seattle man accused of sexually assaulting a 63-year-old stranger has been charged with rape and robbery.

King County prosecutors contend Emilio Robert Hernandez, 45, attacked the woman without provocation late last year on Beacon Hill. Hernandez is alleged to have made off with her purse; he was arrested on March 4, a day after DNA from the scene was found to be his.

“He is an extreme threat to the community as evidenced by his violent conduct here involving a complete stranger,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Carol Spoor told the court. Read more.

City moves to shutter Rainier Beach ‘drug nuisance’ house; elderly owner protests (seattlepi.com):

At 71, Sharon L. Stone describes herself as a woman trying to make ends meet while nursing an injured ankle.

Seattle police offer a different picture, describing the elderly woman as a longtime drug dealer whose [Rainier Beach] home has again become a cocaine den.

Filing a lawsuit last Thursday, the City of Seattle has asked that her home be shuttered under the state’s drug nuisance law. In support of the request, city attorneys note Stone’s home — shared with a man described as her husband, John T. Bliss — has been the subject of at least 83 calls to 911 during the past 18 months.

The house at 8433 55th Ave. S., Assistant City Attorney Beth Gappert told the court, “is the very definition of a drug nuisance.” Read more.

Fleeing vehicle strikes patrol car (SPD):

On March 14th, just after 4 am, an East Precinct patrol officer noticed an older model, dark colored 4 door Toyota or Honda driving with a damaged tail light near Lake Washington Boulevard South and South Charles Street.

The officer attempted to catch up with the vehicle, and then activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to yield and then took off at a high rate of speed.

Another officer was in the area on an unrelated call. The speeding suspect vehicle came towards the second patrol car at a high rate of speed. The officer attempted to get out of the way, but the suspect vehicle side swiped the patrol car, striking the patrol car on the passenger side, causing damage to the wheel and rear side.

The officer sustained minor injuries due to the collision and was checked out at the scene by the Fire Department. The suspect vehicle was last seen heading southbound on Lake Washington Boulevard South. The injured officer later went to the hospital for an exam, but is expected to be ok.
