Powerful Schools is proud to announce that in partnership with Earning By Learning (EBL), the students of Van Asselt Elementary School on Beacon Hill have read enough books to earn $10,000 for their school library.

The Powerful Schools EBL program awards incentive money to the school library for each student who reads and completes a book under the accelerated reader program. Students can earn up to $2 per book read and verified by online testing for their school library.

Students also receive awards such pizza parties, field trips to unique places such as the zoo, and in school assembly celebrations.

According to Powerful Schools Executive Director Tre Maxie, the program has increased school-wide reading by more than 200%. The incentive program has helped struggling readers learn the joys of reading, while supporting their school library.

“I have not seen a program more effective at increasing student reading than the Powerful Schools EBL program,” said Eldoris Turner, principal of Van Asselt. “This is very positive news in a school year that has been faced with budget cuts and uncertainty.”
