South-End Snow Day #7: Forecast, Neighbors Forming Networks, I-90 Traffic Alert & More

December 24, 2008

in News

Forecast: After a 48-hour break, we’ve got steady snow at the RVP World Headquarters in the south valley with about two inches accumulated. There’s a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 4 pm this afternoon, by which time the snow is expected to turn to rain, but we’ll likely get a few more inches between now and then.

The flakes could very well start up again tonight and continue through tomorrow, so unless you’ve got chains or 4WD, or are willing to wait for a bus that may never come, consider yourself stuck for a little while longer.

Stranded in a bad way? Snowmageddon ’08 isn’t all fun and games for Rainier Valley neighbors who are elderly, immobile or otherwise in need of extra care during this crazy cold time. Which is why some thoughtful and generous neighbors have created a network of working wheels throughout the valley to help those with critical travel needs:

Need help? Click a name above to send an email, or call The Post (792-9759) for phone numbers.

Offering help? Please email The Post ASAP if you are able to safely transport a southeast Seattle neighbor with critical needs. Thank you!

Traffic Alert: All westbound lanes of I-90 at Rainier that were blocked due to earlier accident have been cleared, but traffic is nasty up there so please be extra careful if you’re headed that way.

Transportation: Sea-Tac is back to “normal” and the long lines are reported to be gone. Metro is operating at 50% capacity. Highways are “for the most part, clear.”

UPDATE (8:45 am): It’s been snowing steadily in the Othello area for at least three hours straight, with no end in sight… And it’s just been reported that two Othello neighbors whose plane was supposed to depart Sea-Tac at 6 am are on the plane but still sitting on the tarmac awaiting additional de-icing…

UPDATE (10 am): Still snowing…

UPDATE (12 pm): It’s stopped snowing and it looks like the Rainier Valley got approximately 3″ of fresh powder. Don’t see any rain yet…

Re: Metro.

I’ve been hearing from lots of bus-riding folks that the info listed on Metro’s Web site regarding what bus lines are and are not running hasn’t been updated regularly and may not be accurate. On the South End, we can safely say the 36, 7, 42 and 48 will be running their adverse weather routes–meaning no hills or curvy roads– PROVIDED THE STREETS ARE PLOWED.

Thanks for keeping us updated on the road haps in the hood, Amber. You won’t see Bus Bitch go any farther than the couch today.
