More than 450 Seattle University (SU) students turned out this past Saturday to help EarthCorps restore Cheasty Greenspace in Beacon Hill by removing invasive plants like blackberry and ivy that threaten trees in the 43-acre park, as well as stewarding past project sites, preparing the sites for fall planting and shrubs and cleaning out garbage and debris.

According to SU spokesperson Katie Gilliam:

This group of students is the largest to take on a single service project in SU history—more than half of SU’s incoming students participated in the annual Serve Seattle day. Serve Seattle is organized by the university’s Center for Service and Community Engagement to help new students connect with the community through a day of service.

EarthCorps reported that students restored two acres of public land, resulting in the preservation of thousands of trees and other native plants.

The effort is part of the university’s larger commitment to community service and engagement, as 75 percent of SU students participate in service activities throughout the year.

Thank You! The section along Columbian Way is starting to look really nice now that the ivy has been stripped off of a lot of the trees. I am so glad that EArthCorps has taken this project on. The Cheasty greenbelt is a valuable asset to our community. I never understood why the city (parks dept?) wasn’t responsible for maintenance and let the invasive plants take such hold.

Amazing! Thank you SU. I hope the students will stay involved. Just so everyone knows, there are so many groups and volunteers that have been working to restore the Cheasty Greenbelt for the past few years including The Seattle Parks Department, EarthCorps, The Friends of Cheasty Mt. View, Cascade Land Conservancy, Student Conservation Association, Washington Conservation Association…and the list goes on. This is all part of the city-wide Green Seattle Partnership program. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and come out for a planting and forest restoration event- Green Seattle Day on Nov. 7th AT Cheasty. Register at http://www.greenseattle.org
