popoA 19-year old man was arrested early Sunday in connection with a report of multiple shots fired near 40th Avenue South and South Graham Street.

It was about 12:20am when responding officers stopped a car at Renton Avenue South and South Trenton after watching it speed away from the scene.

According to SPD:

There were four subjects inside of the vehicle. Gang Unit detectives also responded to assist with the suspects. One of the suspects, a 19-year old male, was arrested and booked into the King County Jail. A handgun was recovered from the car.

Its good to know that being woken from a dead sleep to call 911 after hearing over 20 shots was worth it. The operator asked me if it could have been fireworks, which honestly hadn’t occurred to me.

The rhythm of consecutive firecrackers as well as the concussion of a firearm being discharged is very different. In late June through July it seems like they ask that a lot.

Good for you for calling it in so quickly. I slept through the last round of shots and have also been complacent and not called in recently because I’ve figured someone else will call in.

It’s really hard for me to tell the difference. I heard what I believed to be firecrackers one night. Then I looked outside and saw a swarm of cops and I went outside asked one if what I heard was gunshots and he told me, yes, and the next time I heard that sound to call 911.

I heard the sound again a few weeks later and it turned out it was firecrackers. Now I don’t know what I’d do if I hear what sounds like firecrackers again, especially as July 4 nears.

The more people who call in gunfire reports, the easier it is for police to triangulate the likely location. Don’t rely on your neighbors to call it in (unless you don’t want to help police catch the culprits).

I don’t know how to tell the difference between gunfire and some fireworks. There’s probably some resource on the web; I should go look…

Precita.org informs us that “gunshots are usually fired in closer succession, often 1-2 shots per second.” Also, from our own experience, and what with SFist HQ located near 715 Harrison, gunshots have a more tinny, slap-across-the-face-ish sound to them. Now you know, so listen closely before you frantically dial 911 on Friday night.

And fireworks are more methodic, if there’s a gunfight, it’s all over in a few minutes, people lighting fireworks might do it for an hour or more…

This is good work by the police. The RVP ran a story about the computers at the fence the other day, now this!

@JvA – round up some friends and visit a firing range sometime. There’s really no way to mistake gunfire for fireworks.

Either way, who cares……they are both illegal so call the police in both cases. And, if the dispatcher diminishes the importance of your call because you can’t definitively determine if they were gunshots then ask for their name and ask to talk to a supervisor. It’s up to them to dispatch and respond.

I once saw someone commiting a felony and I called 911 and the dispatcher kept coaxing me closer to the suspect until they turned around and threatened me…..I won’t ever make that mistake again.
