The community is invited to join Seattle Parks and Recreation this Sat., Dec. 18, from noon to 3 pm for the closing event for Rainier Beach Community Center and Pool:
Come enjoy music, walk down memory lane and learn about the new facility coming to the Rainier Beach neighborhood.
The facility, located at 8825 Rainier Ave. S, will close the following day until spring 2013, when a new community center and pool will open at the same location, funded by revenues from General Obligation Bonds and real estate excise taxes.
The afternoon will feature music from Kimball and the Fugitives with Stickshift Annie memory book signing, light refreshments, and face painting. There will be a free public swim from 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Everyone is encouraged to wear their Rainier Beach shirts.
“We are celebrating the community and the memories we have of this place,” says Martha Winther, Rainier Beach Community Center Coordinator. “We encourage everyone to come commemorate the past and celebrate the coming of the new facility.”

During the design process, Parks worked with the community to develop the best plan for the community. Parks held four community meetings over the last year to gather input and get community feedback as to which design options work best for Rainier Beach. Together the community, A•R•C Architects, and Parks developed the design for this project. Photo/Marsha Kuykendall

Coach T is the teacher for the kid and adult hip hop classes. His performace group Ktt N Up will be performing at this celebration and his youth class will be showcasing what they’ve learned this year (at about 1 pm). The adult hip hop class is exercise based and we’re losing weight and getting fit without it being boring. We are allowed to move at our own pace and never ever made to feel like we’re not up to snuff.
Coach T is young man who is an asset to the Rainiver Valley and we’re lucky they found a place to relocate his classes to. He teaches kids respect, beliving in yourself and the value of working hard and not following the crowd. Anyone who’s met him comes away knowing that there is hope for the future generation.
