The community is invited to join Sustainable South Seattle for a Climate Coop Event on Wed., Oct. 20, at 7 pm to share ideas and hear from neighbors:
We need to do better. We believe if our society doesn’t change some of its habits, we risk leaving a damaged planet to our children. Some of your neighbors are taking matters into our own hands and we want you to join us.
There’s help right now. We think saving money and addressing climate change can go hand in hand. Real options for change are available right now. Many programs are available today to help south-end homeowners, renters and businesses save money on utility and transportation bills. Improving our neighborhood and reducing our impact on the planet are an added bonus!
But figuring out what changes are right for you can be complicated and time consuming.
We think it should be simple. Use less fuel and energy. Save money. Improve the health of our community. Be aware of your carbon impact on the planet. Enjoy the same (or better!) comfort and convenience you’re used to. And save the planet while you’re at it.
Let’s talk. Sustainable South Seattle is hosting a community forum. Your neighbors are coming together on October 20, 2010 to share ideas about how we can work together as a community to save money, improve our neighborhood and do our part to take care of the planet for our children.
Together we believe we can improve our community, create a healthier community and reduce our carbon impacts on the planet.
Ideas we’re looking to include:
- Making it easy for renters, homeowners and business owners to identify ways to reduce energy bills while make your home or business more comfortable
- Securing lower prices on better products, like more efficient appliances, local food and environmentally friendlier products and services, residential energy audits, and cost effective ways to retrofit your home
- Developing individual energy and fuel saving plans and programs
- Creating a “one-stop shop” for energy products and services to help you save money. We’ll bring options to you rather than making you search far and wide.
- Discussing lower prices and providing other incentives for using alternative transportation options
- Providing professional hassle-free, low-cost energy efficiency and renewable energy products in your home and business
The event will be held at Southside Commons (3518 S. Edmunds St.) in Columbia City. Childcare will also be available. RSVP to Climate.coop@gmail.com.

I hope Sustainable South Seattle will lead the conversation about what is ‘green’ and what is faux-green. Too many groups and businesses are claiming they are green when they are not.
For example, the greenest house is the house that is already built. Preserving an existing house, and enhancing it’s heating & electrical system is the greenest thing a homeowner can do. Creating a rental apartment in the basement is a very green thing to do.
Building new homes and condos (especially taller than three stories) is NOT green, yet there are many, many builders and developers that are hovering over the Rainier Valley, hoping to demolish existing homes in order to build many new, tall structures. They claim this is ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ development. Not so.
I hope we’ll have a real conversation about what it means to leave a smaller carbon footprint. Improving your older home and keeping your car rather than buying a new car are a step in the right direction.
Demolishing blocks and blocks of the Rainier Valley in order to build thousands and thousands of small, dense condos and apartments isn’t green at all.
How green/affordable was it to re-side, re-roof all the units in Holly Park, Rainier Vista, High Point only to tear them down a year later? There should have been a criminal investigation into that one.
