From Christie Robertson in Rainier Beach who shared a letter she recently wrote to King County Metro:
The corner at 51st Avenue South and South Creston Street that is the site of a lot of criminal activity. There are a number of things that make this corner prone to problems – the apartment buildings on the corner have a history of problem tenants, the convenience store across the street is a hang-out for drug dealers, and 51st is right at the border of Tukwila and Seattle, so it is difficult for law enforcement officials to take action (people can just cross the street and be in a different city).
The north-going bus stop on this corner gives people an excuse to loiter there. The people I know in my neighborhood all say that they avoid the 51st Avenue South and South Creston Street bus stop.
Would it be possible to remove this bus stop or to move it a block or two north or south so that it is not directly in line with the apartment buildings and the convenience store?
I am curious if others have had any luck with getting a bus stop moved or if there are other solutions to a problem like this.
Earlier this year, Mt. Baker Housing Association (MBHA) announced that it purchased the troubled Creston Park Apartments in Rainier Beach and plans to “renovate, reposition and operate” the property as affordable housing. The 26-unit apartment building is located near 51st Avenue South and Beacon Avenue South near the Tukwila border. Photo/do communications, inc.

I suggest you find one of the ghetto cars in the neighborhood and plow the bus sign down yourself – and if and when they put it back up – do it again. They will eventually get the message. Or you could spread cow crap all over the place.
Good luck, not sure Metro listens to peoples concerns.
How about putting a camera(s) on the stop? Push on MBHA to do this. Seems as though they have a vested interest in showing that crime and low income housing are not related. Their website is http://www.mtbakerhousing.org.

Yeah, they would have addressed the “smell issues”, if they did.
Laurel- What is a “ghetto car”? Please be forthright and not talk in code. What are you really saying?
I agree the location at 51st & Creston is troublesome. The suggestion to contact the MBHA, should lead to a joint effort to address this issue. If not anything else, I would hope that they would also be concerned. Children going to and from school need to feel some level of safety when walking in this area.

She means a “Cluck Bucket”
I love how people but labels on things and it makes no sense. Next it will be
” Did you see those ghetto cows sleeping all day”? and “Man, that rain was ghetto!”.
“Did you see those ghetto cows sleeping all day”? and “Man, that rain was ghetto!”.
Personal foul, improper use of ghetto, 15 yards, try again.
Ok.
*cough cough*
I refused to ride the ghetto bus on rainier ave south.

This class is one of the proper uses of ghetto.
Very good, Gold star for tasha.

To TomT- Mt Baker Housing Association installed 3 cameras directed at the 51st Ave S/Creston corner. Mt. Baker Housing asked the police what they needed, and we agreed to install all the cameras. Additionally in response to “the apartment buildings on the corner have a history of problem tenants” if you have any specifics on which tenants are causing problems…Mt. Baker Housing is all ears.

Ears are good, but if you have someone on sight who is “all eyes” you will know your problem tenants in a minute.
Ghetto car – late 80′s early 90′s sedan, usually with expired tabs and or stolen plates. Spray painted and badly dented, leaking fluids, bald tires and parked in front of drug house. Is this enough visuals or should I go back to wriring in code.
I vote for code!!
Cluck bucket – See ghetto car / Sometimes smaller
I like “ghetto sled”, myself.
Straight Cadillac dippin’ in the ghetto sled.
Unfortunately Seattle has changed and not for the better since I used to live there. I saw the handwriting on the wall years ago when I was in downtown Seattle and ran into one of the aggressive thugs from the gangs originating in Los Angeles while just minding my own business. I also saw man get beaten up by one of the gang members in downtown Seattle in the daylight.
It’s too bad they’ve been coddled for years; now they think they have the right to intimidate and bully people. Seattle should have a mayor or chief of police like they have in Phoenix, Arizona. They don’t fool around with gangsters; the criminals are put into tents in 110 degree heat in the summer with no air conditioning. Many criminals avoid Phoenix. hahaha
110 degrees we would have to send them to the sauna at the YMCA
I do like your thinking though.
I live up the hill from that awful bus stop. The supposed “renovation” of those apartments has already taken place and not one thing has changed. Just this week I’ve seen the usual group of good for nothings shooting dice, drinking, smoking what looks like “blunts” and being the usual menacing creatures they are. The four corners around that bus stop are definite problems and honestly I don’t know that removing the bus stop would do any good. There’s no consistent law enforcement and the knuckleheads there know it.
My son has to pass there while on his way to work and he has started carrying high grade pepper spray.
Definitely not a corner you want school kids walking by. Too bad…yet another area, once a normal city corner, now being transformed to blight.
I’m glad the MBHA is taking note of the problem and has installed cameras. What is done with the data collected by the cameras?
I wonder what else could be done to beef up the law enforcement in the area. Seems like this would be a really good area for cops to just hang out or regularly stop by. I know that border between Tukwila and Seattle is part of the problem. How do police departments between cities historically cooperate?
The neighborhood in general feels pretty good to me. It’s a shame to have one bad corner in the middle of it that brings the whole neighborhood down.
