Ughhh….Not Again From Seattlecrime.com

Shooting at Rainier and Henderson
By Jonah Spangenthal-Lee at August 25, 2010 08:43 PM | Comments (2) | ( 0 votes)
We’re getting word of a shooting at Rainer and Henderson. Again.

Sounds like the victim was shot in the leg.

This is the third shooting at the intersection in the last week or so.

More details when we get them.

Thanks to Silver for the tip.

Maybe we need to get rid of the bux4gold advertiser and get you a sponsor that installs security systems. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of them but I’m getting one anyway.

On a lighter note, am thinking about ripping out my back lawn and putting in a something like clover or a perennial cover crop mix. Anyone in the neighborhood got experience with cover crops and clover lawns? I’ve got a back yard with north east exposure, gets a half day sun, but stays moist all the time.

Does anyone know how long the “construction” (in quotes because it implies it’s constructive) is going to last at the corner of MLK/Rainier? I never see anyone working except the occasional police officer minding the pit. It’s making the commute home a real daily nightmare.

What do we need to do to get the Mayor and City Council to recognize the escalating violence at Rainier and Henderson? Am I the only one who thinks the silence from leadership is deafening? It feels like Belltown and biking is the priority, and South Seattle can just twist in the wind. I’m really frustrated and tired of feeling unsafe. This is a crisis.

Aimee – I keep having flashbacks to that Katrina fundraiser clip of Kanye West and Mike Myers when I think about McGinn.
You can substitute Kanye’s words with the phrase “Mike McGinn doesn’t care about the South End.”

Aimee –

If you can make a strong case that by reducing crime in S. Seattle the additional end result will be greater sustainability of the environment, you will have the key to the political leverage required for CHANGE and HOPE.

@Aimee – I feel the same way. As a community we need to somehow come together and make the precinct and the mayor realize that we deserve better and our streets should be made safe to walk and drive. I have written to the mayor and Captain Emerick, maybe we need to march on their offices.

Hmm…. maybe if there is someone on the blog who is a good video editor they can do their magic on that video clip and substitute our fearless leaders. …

@Tiffany
They left a nice big pit at Rainier and Genesee also. The no parking barriers say from 8/9/2010 to 10/15/2010 are they actually planning on leaving these big ass ditches in the road until mid October?

And to SDOT you might want to think about moving the line that the cars have to stop at back aa bit as I watched the # 39 bus almost go into the ditch trying to turn on to Rainier south bound from Genesee.

And how is this supposed to help traffic anyway?

It just seems like such an easy win from both a PR perspective: With I forget how many shootings, stabbings, beatings in the last 10 days at R&H, just put an emphasis patrol down there. PR win. Community is safer. The Mayor and Council can say they’re doing something about a crime wave in our neighborhood. I hate to say this, but I really feel it – if this were happening in any other part of the city, there would be a response from leadership. It seems like this violence is all that’s expected of South Seattle, and so just let it be. I would be happy to be proved wrong.

@Tipster – I think the “environment” of R&H would greatly improve with decreased violence. How’s that?

12 erich 08.26.10 at 10:13 am

Looking at the pictures, hmmmmmm maybe not. Ah well.

Aimee –

LOL! Interesting twist! What I really meant to say — to clarify — is that the animals and the trees are more important than the people. I won;t go into why this is happening at a political level, since my post would likely be removed. This seems to be where a lot of legislation in this country is headed, including here at the local level. If you know that and you leverage it, you can make a better case for change since this is where all the money is flowing.

One longshot idea (just an example):
Reducing crime reduces the need for closed windows during the summertime, to prevent home break-ins. This in turn reduces the need for air conditioning on warm days. Less A/C means fewer carbon emissions.

And voile, you have your case.

Anyone wanna join in on a prayer gathering on Rainier and Henderson?

Om shanti shanti shanti……

15 HBW 08.26.10 at 11:30 am

I think we should have a vigil down there at R&H – I’m in!

@Tipster – good idea. I have been trying to get sidewalks forever along with the rest of the Southe End, I guess I have to show by my son walking to school I can cut down my driving and there will be less pollution and gas used!!! Now how can we convince the lawmakers to change the law in how kids are punished who are caught with a gun…..hmmmmm

16 South Seattle Cop 08.26.10 at 2:26 pm

Someone was apparently perusing the RVP this past week:

This past weekend the usual contingent of South Precinct officers sent up to Belltown was instead sent to…….

…wait for it….

Rainier & Henderson!

Don’t know if this was a one-time thing or is going to be a regular occurrence.

See you at R&H! :-)

Now McSchwinn’s even scared to show up to a crime meeting in the East Precinct!

18 Mark B 08.26.10 at 2:42 pm

He knew he was going to get spanked.
I wonder what event he is “required” to be at?
It better not be some bicycle event, or anything in Belltown.

19 tlp 08.26.10 at 3:35 pm

Well I guess one of the sorrier chapters in the Seattle Public School endless juggle of names and programs is official. I just got a notice from Seattle Public Schools announcing the re-naming of The Brighton School (aka Brighton Elementary) to Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. Dedication “celebration”on Sept. 8, 2010. I’m guessing this means that they are going to sell off the MLK elementary in the CD. Way to go SPS. What a way to honor Dr. King.

20 Mich 08.26.10 at 6:22 pm

Anyone else see a group of people walking through the south end, checking out buildings, and surveying on crime?

21 Mark B 08.26.10 at 7:35 pm

@Mich
I believe it is related to the CPTED meeting last night.

22 Mich 08.26.10 at 8:37 pm

Is there a log or recording of these meetings?

23 Tasha 08.27.10 at 7:41 am

A little bird whispered in my ear and said McGinn will be in RB on Sept 30.

24 Mark B 08.27.10 at 8:08 am

A little bird whispered that he was going to be at the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meeting also.

Some birds lie.

25 Tasha 08.27.10 at 8:29 am

It’s not the birds, it’s the man that is so meek and timid that he can’t even deal with a community up in arms. I look at the interview he did with King 5 and I swear he was going to burst into tears and run off.

At least Nickels used to puff his chest out when dealing with matters like this.

Sheesh I sound so hardcore :)
