LAKEWOOD/SEWARD PARK – Next week, the Lakewood Seward Park Community Club, in partnership with the Southeast Seattle Crime Prevention Council, will host a Public Safety Meeting to address several recent violent crimes in the area, including a brutal robbery in which a man was stabbed numerous times.
Lakewood Seward Park Community Club president and longtime Rainier Valley neighbor Jeannie O’Brien said that South Precinct Captain Mike Nolan and other officers from the South Precinct are planning to attend.
She added that Seattle City Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Bruce Harrell, also a Seward Park neighbor, has been invited but is so far unconfirmed, as are Chief of Police John Diaz and his command staff.
“I would love to see Standing Room Only at this event,” said O’Brien. “We need to show how concerned we are about these recent events and the increase of all types of crime in the South End. This is a very disturbing and troubling trend that needs to stop.”
“We need to feel safe in our neighborhood,” she added. “We need to find out why this is happening, and figure out ways to work together to end it.”
The meeting is planned for Mon., Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Lakewood Seward Park Community Clubhouse (4916 S. Angeline St).
Rainier Valley neighbors are hoping that Seattle City Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Bruce Harrell, also a Seward Park resident, will attend next week’s public safety meeting.

Bruce “Collect a Check” Harrell hasn’t responded to if he’s coming yet? Get out????
And is Sally Clark coming? I know she’s busy as Council President know, but she does live in this neighborhood too, and she does use the Light Rail.
Has anyone made flyers to hand out/post at local businesses in Seward Park adn Columbia City? The more people that see them and know, the better!
If neither Harrell or Clark show up it should tell you all you need to know.
Hopefuly there is no fund raiser for Vulcan that night.
Sorry, prematurely posted that without finish my thought: I would be willing to walk around and hand out flyers/let businesses know. If we have signs hanging up- all the patrons will see them as well. Problem is-I can’t make them as my computer was stolen, lol. Isn’t that ironic? But if someone wants to connect with me and do that- I am in.
Also, are people aware of the Saturday meeting with the Mayor– I think it was posted somewhere else on here- but it is Sat Feb 11 @ the Esquire Club 11 AM- 2 PM. Standing room only!!
I sure wish Harrell’s photo wasn’t here. Free advertising and PR for an individual who has done little to nothing for his neighborhood.
Seattle Times says charges have been filed in the stabbing assault. Here’s a sad story from 2003 about the perpetrator’s family. Sad in retrospect anyway: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20021215&slug=fund15
Seattle City Attorney’s office newest tactic for crime prevention:

It’s a good start, interesting to see how effective these attorney liaisons will be. They might be able to shut down crack houses and meth labs at a faster rate. Wonder if they can impose more “Drug Free” Zones or even “Gun Free” Zones.
@trudy206: You want to impose more “Gun Free” Zones? You know that only ends up disarming law-abiding citizens, right? Sure, that might make sense in some places like schools or courts, but elsewhere? Sometimes, “Gun Free” zones really just means “Free Fire Zones” for criminals… Not to mention the whole constitutional illegality thing like trying to ban guns in parks… Just sayin’.
Seattle City Councilmember Bruce Harrell will attend the meeting on Monday. Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes will be there as well. SPD Chief Diaz is the one who has not committed but I expect to get confirmation either way today. We are inviting our South Precinct City Attorney liaison and hope that she can make it.
I don’t understand why this is so shocking. Rainier Valley has a rough history, and despite gentrification efforts has been fortunate enough to keep a lot of its oppressed populations still around. Just because the city develops its infrastructure and business does not necessarily improve the lives of those people who are living near such improvements.
Chief Diaz has confirmed his attendance at Monday night’s meeting.

Where did you find the info about charges being filed? I can’t find any mention of the crime at ALL in the Times. Just shows how important we are south of I-90.
Found the link after much google searching:

Here’s a good spot also – but you have to check on a daily basis.

Here’s a site which has more booking info

Trudy206–the precinct liaison program isn’t new. It’s been around for years, although it was ramped down (and temporarily disappeared) because the federal funding that paid for it disappeared. It is an effective program; I’m glad it’s coming back.
So, there was a great turn out last night. There was standing room only and many people had to wait outside. I want it to be clearly noted that Council Member Harrell left after he introduced the police officers. Harrell is the chair of public safety with the city council. It should be mentioned that he left two members of his staff to listen to what his constituents had to say.
The simple fact that the chair of public safety couldn’t be bothered to stick around and listen to what we had to say about safety in our neighborhoods speaks volumes to the type of response that we can expect from the city.
There were good stats from the police though. In the last three weeks there have been a lot of arrests. Hearing about the systems that the kids use for the bus and train robberies was pretty intense. They have quite a system worked out.
Harrell only lives about ten blocks from there.
Maybe he left something on the stove?
Maybe forgot to set his tivo for American Idol?
Maybe just didn’t give a flying rats a**?
Well maybe we all needed to walk to his house after the meeting last night and ask him to come out and talk about it. Perhaps if we all showed up at his house every time there was a shooting in our community he would start to find that he’s inconvenienced enough to give a flying RA
Nah, he just remembered he got reelected without caring last time.
I just checked the DVR and it was on Komo 4 for a minute or two. Surprisingly, there’s no video on their website. Kind of weird given the turnout.
There is a story on channel 4 now in the Rainier Valley News but I don’t know how to link it.
This is what I found.

Has this clown ever made a good decision?
“Diaz promises police will get the worst offenders off the streets if neighbors will help offer children alternatives to gang life.”
So he breaks it and we are supposed to fix it, Really?
All of the current politicians need to be voted out. Their inaction is a decision to bring a lower standard of living to us.
Did Sally even respond to why she couldn’t come???
“Diaz promises police will get the worst offenders off the streets if neighbors will help offer children alternatives to gang life.”
I hate to break it to people, but offering a happy meal to these kids is NOT going to change the game when it comes to gangs.
There is a line of song that explains it well
“Picture me working at McDonald’s, I’d rather pull a mack on you, Sorry Miss Jackson but I’m packing”.
That’s the mentality…..
@22 – What about the parents offering an alternative to gang life?
As for Sally she’s busy primping for her run at Mayor.
@Tom T
That should be a given.
I’m wondering what the neighbors are supposed to do?
I’m just saying, I’m not bringing any of them to my house to do work, it might sound cold but I’m not going to pay someone to case my house.
