Have you had a chance to stop by the Seattle Planning Commission’s web site and tell the city what you think of your neighborhood?

Status reports are currently being prepared for 24 neighborhood plans throughout the city – including southeast Seattle. If you live, work, attend school, own a business, or regularly visit Columbia City, Hillman City, Genesee and/or Rainier Beach, the Planning Commission wants to know what you think, including what’s working, what’s not working and how you’d like to see your neighborhood grow and develop over the next 20 years.

The last day to complete the questionnaire is this Fri., Aug. 21.

It was just a week ago that we reported a dismal response on the part of our community and now, Rainier Beach is in the top four with 199 responses and the Columbia City/Hillman City/Genesee area is holding strong at third place with 263 responses. Let’s keep it up, neighbors!

Rainier Beach dropped to 5th but can quickly recover to 4th (only 1 vote behind) and Columbia City is two votes away from 2nd most votes. Ballard will be hard to beat as they are up to 733 which is over twice as many as the nearest contender.

It’s too bad the survey probably doesn’t have a better feedback mechanism for folks who might not have computer access. With such a large immigrant population in SE Seattle I speculate that the system puts our community at a disadvantage as compared to Ballard where most residents have higher incomes, access to computers, and English is their primary language.

Hi Tom

I agree with your comment on computer access and English as a primary language. I’ll pass along that input to the City and the Neighborhood Planning Advisory Committee at their meeting tonight. The good news is that overall the City only expected to get 500 surveys and there are now more than 3,000 0nline and hardcopy responses!

Everyone should fill out the survey. The problem is, what do YOU know about your neighborhood? Have you read your Neighborhood Plan? Do you know the priorities of your neighborhood plan, what’s been implemented and what has not been implemented ? Have you seen the plan matrix for your neighborhood? Do you agree with the Neighborhood Plan Implementation Matrix?

There are very serious problems with the city’s methodology for gathering data about neighborhood planning. For starters, anyone may fill out the on-line form whether you live in Seattle or Sao Paulo, Brazil. The lack of control opens the door to all sorts of mischief and skewed data. The survey results will be passed directly to DPD and not vetted with communities for accuracy or to determine broad-based community support.

The current plan update process and the Planning Commission survey wouldn’t pass the smell test in any city except Greg Nickels Seattle. It’s simply more of what we’ve come to expect of the Nickels administration.
