From SPD:
[Shortly after 6 pm Wednesday] officers responded to a 911 call of a strong-arm robbery of an elderly woman that occurred in a parking lot at Rainier Avenue South and South College Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that two suspects drove up to the victim in a red and gray Chevy van. Suspect #1, a female in her 20’s, exited the van and grabbed the victim’s purse as the victim was at her car. The suspect struck the victim and knocked her to the ground. The suspect then jumped back into the van’s front passenger seat and the van sped away.
Witnesses called 911 and gave a description of the van and the suspects. A responding officer spotted the suspects near Beacon Avenue South and South Ferdinand Street and began following them. Additional officers converged on the suspects and a traffic stop was initiated at MLK Jr. Way South and South Juneau Street. Suspect #2, a female in her 40’s and the driver of the van, was taken into custody without incident.

Suspect #1 then jumped into the driver’s seat of the van and sped off southbound on MLK Jr. Way South. Officers gave chase. While failing to pull over for officers, suspect #1 drove onto the curb, struck a tree and ran several red lights at a high rate of speed.

Suspect #1 attempted (unsuccessfully) to ram a marked patrol car near MLK Jr. Way South and South Graham Street. Suspect #1 then continued on at a high rate of speed and collided with four occupied civilian vehicles at MLK Jr. Way South and South Othello Street. Following those collisions, officers took suspect #1 into custody and recovered the victim’s stolen purse.

The victim who was robbed and assaulted at the beginning of this incident is a female in her 80’s. She sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene by SFD Medics and released (she declined to be transported). The occupants of the four vehicles struck by the suspects’ van sustained minor injuries and were also treated and released at the scene by SFD Medics.

While this investigation remains active and on-going, officers will be booking suspect #1 into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery, Investigation of Vehicular Assault, and Investigation of Eluding Police Officers. Suspect #2 was interviewed and released.

The victim is in her 80′s WTF?
How big of a piece of S#*t do you have to be to pull that one? 1 suspect in her 20′s 1 in her 40′s that does not even add up to 80. They should put them in a cell and give the old lady an hour and a stun gun.
Mygawd! This is disturbing, very disturbing. Very disturbing. My comments on other articles about not wanting to walk in this area after 5 are now making me rethink that, but jeeze, I travel by bus, I live in RV. I guess I’ll just have to get more keys to stick between my fingers and practice Don’t F With Me looks.
That poor lady! I’m still reeling.
Has anyone else noticed a real improvement in the arrests lately?
Also, no teenagers have been killed this year that I can think of.
The SPD has been doing some really good police work.
yay!! SPD! what a story~ !!
All I know is, who would try to flee in THAT van?!? They might as well have been in a neon green El Camino!! Did they think they’d just sneak away in that thing?
@MarkB-I agree. There should be a special level at Dante’s pad for people who hit 80 year old folks.
I specifally remember this van parked across the street from my house, which is across the street from a playground, yesterday in the afternoon. I’m so glad a didn’t feel like cleaning up the yard.
“who would try to flee in THAT van?!?”
That’s what I’m sayin’!
*sorry – that was suppose to read “specifically”
I think the police and the city know that they will HAVE to do something about the crime down here BEFORE the light rail gets up and running. Otherwise developers will see the light and realize that few people who can afford high-end condos will want to live in Rainier Valley—no matter how attractive proximity to the train may be.
If Light Rail brings us better police protection, then perhaps it really will be a good thing! Now, if it could only entice Trader Joe’s…
The part that bothers me is how obviously comfortable she (in her 20s)felt that she could get away with it. The level of arrogance and self-importance is simply amazing. Narcissism at its highest level — “I am the center of the Universe and you exist to serve my basic animal desires.” Now she gets to find out she’s really not the center of the Universe. Tough lesson. Trying to ram a police car will add a lot of time to her sentence.
i was wondering what that helicopter was doing above my house while i was cookin dinner.
and i secont that SolvayGirl, a trader joe’s would be awesome
I would love to see a Trader Joe’s in our neighborhood, but not to replace Safeway. Truth is most folks (including myself) cannot afford to shop at TJ’s on a regular basis.
Isn’t that the A-Team’s van? Way to go SPD! Keep up the good work.
Why was the 2nd occupant, the original driver, interviewed and then released? Isn’t she an accessory to burglary?
I love Trader Joe’s! If you really shop right you can get much better deals there than at Safeway. I guess it depends what you buy too.
It occurs to me how dumb it was for this 20 year old perp to chose a victim who was over 80. Most women that age do not carry credit cards, they sure don’t have ipods, and they’re probably carrying less than $20.00!
Looks like they were trying to make a point about the lack of Park n Rides!
suspect #2 was interviewed and released??? after that chase??? that must be a typo
or me just misreading the post. haha sorry. still seems like she was an accomplice though
MyraMyra, I find Trader Joe’s cheaper than Safeway. I wish Grocery Outlet would open in the RV. I went to the Madrona one today and saved more than I spent and got the same things I found in Safeway, as well as TJ’s . I’d like both, actually as there are some things Trader’s has that I can’t find anywhere else.
sorry for going so far off-thread
So true Edna,
Grocery Outlet really beats those two places out. I could spend $20 and come home with a ton of real food.
Grocery Outlet used to be located off MLK near Rainier Ave. S, but closed recently. Closest one is now in Madrona. Best deals there IMO are the goat cheese, olive oil, and wine. MacPherson’s is where I go for equally good deals, but for produce. The quality is just as good as what you find in the corporate chain stores, and the prices are less than half.
I take that back… the corporate chain stores have products that have too much packaging, their produce is sprayed with water to make it rot faster when you get it home, they label every single piece of fruit and vegetable, and they use gas coloring and wax on everything that will allow this. In other words, lesser quality, for twice the price. I wish they would just go out of business (along with McDonald’s and their ilk).
Edna, there was a Grocery Outlet until about a year or two ago. Failed due to the light rail construction. And in its place we will have a private park and ride courtesy of Diamond. Just got this email:
“Good afternoon. We will, by about the 20th of this month, have a location on Rainier Avenue South available for daily parking. This lot is located on the property of the old Grocery Outlet just past where MLK and Rainier cross. The lot that you are speaking of is a medical/dental clinic, but this lot is only open on the evenings and weekends when the clinic is closed. ”
I hope this answers your question. If not, please feel free to contact me and let me know how I can further assist.

@ Jimmy Twilight – SPD has been more attentive to South Seattle lately – they cannot argue with the crime statistics that show there are double digit increases in most of the crime categories……it’s also an election year for someone and he doesn’t want the bad press.
Diamond is putting in parking lots in S. Seattle? That’s F’ing wonderful.
SSSL
Yep, if Sound Transit won’t the private market will. Bet they end up being full.
Anon, I mourned the loss of the Rainier Grocery Outlet. I don’t shop as frequently as I like at Grocery Outlet, if only it were closer. Same goes for TJ’s.
So perfect for a vegan like me. I know some people who don’t like it but they’re meat-eaters. Not that there’s anything wrong with peoples choices, it’s because they don’t sell meat.
The day it closed is the day I began disliking Light-Rail.
Now to take the tongue from my cheek….
Agreed that TJ’s has amazing deals on many staples, and they use no artificial ingredients in any of their house brands. For my baby daughter, I’m currently loving Joe’s O’s (like Cheerios). No high-fructose corn syrup and always $1.99 for a giant box. I think for meat TJ’s prices might run on the high side, but for virtually everything else, they’re often 40% less than comparable items not on sale at the grocery store.
GROCERY STORES!! IT’S NERO FIDDLING WHILE ROME BURNS DOWN. COME ON!! FOCUS—IT’S ABOUT THE KIDS!!!
In my last post, I suggested that people get out of their comfort zones and get to know ALL their neighbors, rich/poor, tidy/sloppy, landscaped/overgrown, black/white/brown, educated/not so much educated, nice car in driveway/not so nice car in driveway, that is, other types of neighbors—including those who are just plain different from you—as a neighborhood response to crime.
I have been thinking about that. It is a really small, really inadequate idea.
It is the young people we need to reach out to. It doesn’t matter how well-behaved you and your kids are. Forget that!
It doesn’t matter that other parents can’t control their kids. Forget that!
What we can do, each and every one of us, of all types and ages, is to volunteer in the RV with a group that offers good stuff to teenagers and younger kids. I saw the article about the event at the RV Boys and Girls Club/Teen Center, with Marion Wright Edelman (sp?). She said, shame on us. Some of us were hoping she was talking to somebody else….But we live here, we are the neighborhood, and these are the kids in our neighborhood. If we wait for them to all be locked up or fixed (still have some magical thinking going on in your head?) we will never feel safe or really belong. If you are waiting for the “gentry” to move them out, forget that!! This is here and now. Wake up, get out of the house, find a place to volunteer with kids.
Go to http://www.volunteermatch.org That is how I found Katharine’s Place. Or just call the RV B&G/Teen Center:
http://www.rainiervistabgc.org/ (206) 436-1890
I’m calling them today. I’d love to meet you there. My name tag will say Catharine.
IMO, you’re fighting a losing battle. You’re competing with mass media that continually bombards these kids with intentional anti-community messaging from day one. You have to unplug the kid from the grid to change the kid. In other words, change the grid, not the kid. The kid is a result of the grid. And it’s not just kids… most adults in this country grew up on the same grid and don’t even realize how programmed they are. First free yourself from your programming, then possibly you might be able to free someone else as well. Attack the problem at the head, not the foot. Repeating the same old crap that never worked in the first place ain’t gonna change diddley now, is it?
@ Pug Dog Lover – totally agree and believe there should be more dispersion of the social services to other areas in the city to help change the grid.
Change the grid…
Why not just say, it’s not my job.
What do you expect kids to do while you wait on that grid change?
Very Ayn Rand of you.
