Mayor Meets With Rainier Valley Neighbors to Discuss Crime, Schools, Transportation, Etc. (VIDEO)

October 1, 2010

in News,Politics

A packed house greeted Mayor Mike McGinn Thursday night as he rallied his troops to discuss crime, schools, transportation and more with more than 100 Rainier Valley neighbors.

Also on hand to answer questions from community members were SPD’s Deputy Chief of Operations & Community Relations Nick Metz, Captain Ron Wilson of the Department’s Community Outreach Section, South Precinct Captain Dave Emerick, South Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon and others.

Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition president Gregory Davis moderated the event using African proverbs and a request that audience members try to move beyond venting and complaints and look for possibilities and ideas for improvement.

During the meeting, community members discussed their concerns regarding crime, police brutality, failing south-end schools, road diets, transportation and the relationship of young people and immigrants with police in the Rainier Valley.

a number of people witnessed Jeff Bezos in attendance. Does anyone know why he was there?

Maybe he wants to one-up Zuckerberg and is looking for some schools in need. Here’s hoping.

Anyone know of a transcription of this meeting? There sure is a lot of blah-blah to wade through. Plus, the video keeps stopping on me and never resumes.

Amazing! Simply wonderful to see such a big group of caring citizens getting together. It was exciting to be a part of. Thanks to all who helped put it together…

Does anyone know what the woman in the back was yelling about starting around 81:00?

I have to say, the mayor gained a couple of points with me. He proved to be a very good listener–he summarized each speakers concerns very accurately, and then responded. He didn’t trip up once. I didn’t necessarily agree with him on all points, but my impression is that he is sincere in his commitment to the quality of life for our city and our neighborhood, and appears to have a social justice perspective.

However, he is still proving himself, and he will now need to follow-through on some of his commitments.

Can someone sum up that 86 minute video with 5-10 bullet points?

Was Bezos really there or just a look alike? Is he captured in the video? Maybe he’s going to fund some program to one up Gates. Waiting for Superman is a good movie about efforts to make education better in the States. Perhaps Bezos saw it and was compelled to do something. Let’s hope.

SE Seattle has the potential to be transformed if the community and parents demand excellent teachers. The high, middle & elementary schools cannot be drop out factories. We deserve better!

I just got off the phone with Craig at Amazon’s media relations. Jeff was not at the meeting.
