Today is the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, the brains behind more than 60 odd and fanciful tales for children, and the staff at Jefferson Community Center (JCC) on Beacon Hill is planning a party to celebrate the famous American author.
Say! I like Green Eggs and Ham! is an all-ages event planned for Fri., March 20, from 6 to 8 pm at JCC (3801 Beacon Ave. S.). The cost is $1 per person and $5 per family and includes a “scrumptious” dinner of green eggs and ham (really!), a Dr. Seuss feature film, a wide variety of Dr. Seuss titles to peruse and games designed to introduce participants to the real Dr. Seuss.
“This is a way for us to honor Dr. Seuss for his amazing abilities and all that he’s provided to the world,” said JCC recreation coordinator Doreen Beaver. “We’re going to have some fun with it. Plus, it’s a great excuse for us to make green eggs and ham!”
Did You Know?
- Before Theodore Seuss Geisel found fame as a children’s author, he worked as a political cartoonist and advertising illustrator.
- “The Cat and the Hat” (1957) and “Green Eggs and Ham” (1960) were lively alternatives to the dullness of the “See Spot run” primers. With only 223 and 50 vocabulary words respectively and much repetition, the books are ideally suited for beginning readers.
- Theodore Seuss Geisel died in San Diego, Calif. on September 24, 1991, at the age of 87.

I want this stamp, to scan and blow up reeeeel big.
Thanks for the Lorax video. I’d never seen that before, but it presages the Grinch.
I am surprised that it would be shown here, because it is the biggest tree-hugger video known to man. The precursor to Jesus, Thoreau, Pete Seger, Bob Dylan, John Denver and all those other lefties that would tell someone what they could and couldn’t do with their land. Profit vs. Prophet.
I hope Anonymous and his friends don’t see it and take offense.
Even the healthcare system is full of thneeds, and the last tree is almost cut down. Don’t want a silent Spring.
