Mich on Train vs. Truck in Columbia City; No Injuries:
I wonder how many of these run ins occur out of driver desperation. Sit at a light crossing MLK a few times and you’ll soon know what I mean. Bring a book, it’ll take you a while to get through the intersection.
The dialogue that occurs here between friends, neighbors and engaged citizens is one of the features that makes your RVP such a valuable community resource. Your RVP does not necessarily endorse the opinions expressed in the Comment of the Week.

It’s true. 8 minutes is the longest I’ve waited so far. If you sit through a whole cycle and a train comes just before your chance to turn, the cycle will reset to N/S traffic once the train passes. If the signals were designed better — if they picked up where they left off in the cycle — it would be less frustrating.
Additionally, if they would actually sense if a car is waiting or not (instead of dumbly cycling through) it would help. Every time I make a left turn at Dakota the signal first changes to allow E/W traffic — even though nobody is waiting.
I’m sure I’ve waited at least 10 minutes on more than one occasion.
I’m still waiting.
yeah, Mark, and you’re blocking the right of way! Snork.
“yeah, Mark, and you’re blocking the right of way! Snork.”
Snork?
Slang Dictionary
snork definition
[snork]
in.
to smoke marijuana or hashish. (Drugs.) : They snorked until they could snork no more.
Mimi, are you implying that I am at the light roasting a big old fatty bobatty blunt?
Yes, the wait is sometimes long (I need to take the left off of MLK @ Dawson whenever I’m coming home by car, so I understand).
But regarding the collision in question – I thought the driver was making the illegal left from MLK heading north (and not just running the light from MLK heading south) . Not positive, but from the directing of his truck and what he said in the interview, that was the distinct impression I got. …. which of course has nothing to do with the long wait times discussion.
direction – not directing
