COLUMBIA CITY – Seattle’s 18th annual Neighborhood Appreciation Day is this Saturday, and Mayor Mike McGinn will mark the occasion with a Town Hall meeting at the Royal Esquire Club in Columbia City.
“As part of the Engage Seattle initiative, in order to ensure that as many people as possible who live, work, or play in Seattle are able to voice their concerns and offer their feedback directly to the mayor, we’re holding a series of town halls in every part of the city,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Sol Villarreal in an email.
According to the City, the Neighborhood Appreciation celebration began in 1995 when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate “a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other.”
Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed the Saturday before Valentine’s Day as Neighbor Appreciation Day. The observance has grown every year since.
The Columbia City Town Hall will be held Sat., Feb. 11, from 11 am to 12 pm at the Royal Esquire Club (5016 Rainier Ave. S.).

I know it’s not PC to like this mayor, but I think he does a nice job. And no, I’m not a cyclist.
Did anyone go to this meeting? I was not able to go for health reasons and have not seen any real response to this….
Did the mayor show up?
Yes, and yes. The mayor was present, along with staffers from various city departments (SDOT, etc.) and representatives from the South Precinct and SFD’s Battalion 5. The turnout in general was unfortunately a little underwhelming, especially coming after the lines-out-the-door meeting at the Lakewood – Seward Park Community Center.
That said, there were some good questions, other than a couple of clowns who wasted everyone’s time by complaining about the Mayor’s legislatively-set salary and fascism (?). It’s apparently the fourth meeting they’ve done this at. There was a great question from a high school student regarding extending hours at Van Asselt Community Center, and I think everyone appreciated hearing from a well-spoken young guy.
