Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – Court Street Press presents ‘You Never Try, You Never Know: Six Years in Liberia’:

Letters Home — Rich in Detail, Generous in Spirit:

In 1971, Ruth and Harold Jacobson—a registered nurse and a maintenance mechanic in their 50s—joined the Peace Corps and went to Liberia.

During their three years as volunteers and three more years as staff at a mission hospital, Ruth chronicled their experiences in weekly letters to her mother and family. From the mundane to hair-raising, she described the details of their life and work, the events of the times, the everyday life in the villages where they lived, and people’s customs.

Ruth taught midwifery and did village nursing, tending to the wounds and ills people brought to her door, and sometimes delivering babies in lamplight in people’s homes. Harold did maintenance work, keeping everything from diesel caterpillars to hospital equipment running, and after work repaired sewing machines, cars, and whatever else needed fixing.

You Never Try, You Never Know: Six Years in Liberia is a compilation of Ruth’s letters. It presents a generous but unvarnished view of life as volunteers in a developing country, and offers a portrait of the Liberian people in pre-war (and pre-cell phone) Liberia. In the end, the letters also paint a portrait of Ruth herself, revealing a strength of character and an approach to life instructive and inspiring for anyone who is thinking about or planning to work in a developing country.

If you enjoy reading other people’s letters, if you’d like to vicariously experience African village life, if you enjoy entertaining, detailed travel writing…this book is for you.

What readers have to say:

“This collection of letters from a middle-aged Peace Corps volunteer and mission worker is a fascinating insight into the life of American volunteers abroad.” Mike Wold

“Openness. Honesty. Integrity. All these shine in this book. I recommend this book to anyone interested in serving overseas or in a new and different culture.” Jordan Holtam

‘You Never Try, You Never Know’, by Ruth Jacobson (Court Street Press, 2011) is available in Soft cover ($18.95) and e-book ($6.95)  from Amazon and Amazon Kindle Store, or directly from Court Street Press (info@courtstreetpress.com).

Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – Community Power Works (CPW).

When the City of Seattle launched CPW last spring, homeowners in the eligible areas began to take advantage of government subsidized energy assessments and energy upgrades. Now that winter has arrived and homeowners are feeling the chill, the program is starting to heat up.

The CPW program currently offers rebates and incentives that help to off-set the overall cost of the upgrade to the tune of $1,000 for most homeowners. In addition, time-sensitive offers, such as a current incentive for homeowners to sign up by Thanksgiving to get an extra $500 off the cost of the upgrade. Affordable financing options are also available through the program, including a loan from the program that enables participants to put no money down and repay on their Seattle city light bill.

Washington Park home owner Allyson Adley said, “When we learned that 86% of the warm air in our house was escaping each hour and being replaced with cold air from outside, we were shocked. That provided us with the motivation to act.”

CPW is a federally funded, neighborhood energy upgrade initiative that aims to upgrade over 2,000 homes and small businesses in 24 neighborhoods throughout downtown, central and southeast Seattle.  The process involves signing up for the program through CPW and working through CPW’s home energy experts to receive a deeply-discounted whole-home energy audit, getting expert advice on prioritizing the work based on the needs of the home and homeowner, receiving bids and having the work done by CPW’s highly-qualified partner contractors, receiving financing, rebates and incentives to help offset costs, and finally having work quality-checked by program experts. Residents can find out if they qualify for CPW by visiting the program’s website.  The program will last through June 2013.

CPW is designed to help homeowners and small business owners invest in making their home and business space energy efficient. For example, many homes from downtown through the Central District down to Rainier Beach depend on oil heat, which is more costly and inefficient than more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as a heat pump.

The process starts with a $95 energy audit, which is normally $400. Then the homeowner determines what improvements should be made and selects a contractor, and if needed, a lender. The contractors only get paid once the worked has been quality checked by Community Power Works and customer is satisfied.

Many clients say they have learned more about their home through the energy assessment.

Carrie Evans and her husband bought a 1930s house in Mt. Baker last spring. Two months after moving in, she heard about the Community Power Works program from a friend and signed up for an audit.

“We learned a lot about our house,” said Evans. “The auditors were professional, thorough, and explained their process well. We knew that our old house was leaky and not very energy efficient. The auditor identified for us a list of potential projects and their estimated costs, which helped us prioritize what projects to move forward on now, and what can wait until a future year.”

“We go into homes and we write a prescription for a healthier home that is the solution that fits both the house and the home owner,” said Bob Thoreson, a home auditor with Home Rx.

To become a contractor with CPW, candidates have to undergo rigorous screening and adhere to High Roads standards including paying living wages and hiring crew members that are trained in local quality training programs.

“We don’t just do the retrofit,” said Ammen Jordan, manager of Home Performance Collaborative, one of CPW’s qualified contractors. “Our people are trained energy advisors.”

Community Power Works internal and field partner energy experts guide homeowners and renters (with landlord approval) through every step of the upgrade process.

All contractors are small, locally-owned businesses, 18% of which are minority-owned, 10% of which are women-owned, and 10 percent veteran-owned. Homeowners can choose from eleven CPW approved contractors.

After the work is done, a CPW energy auditor returns to conduct a Quality Assurance check, which is built into the program.

For Adley’s home, her energy use went from 24,000 kWhe to 10,000 kWhe, saving almost 60% over previous energy costs.

“I cannot get over how much value we’ve added to the house with the CPW upgrade. We feel good that we are not buying oil any more, and it’s a relief not to have to open that bill,” said Adley.

Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).

SDOT is planning several upcoming open house events throughout Seattle to present the City’s recently released Transit Master Plan (TMP) – a 20-year vision for transit in Seattle – and solicit citizen feedback:

Come to an open house to learn more about the TMP, talk to SDOT staff, and share your ideas about the future of transit in Seattle.

The Transit Master Plan will be an extensive update to the 2005 Seattle Transit Plan, which identified key corridors linking urban villages and established performance standards for transit service. The TMP will expand on that work and include evaluation of rail modes, rapid bus services, station design, and capital infrastructure.

The Transit Master Plan will address many critical issues:

  • Identifying the city’s most important transit corridors that carry high ridership today, as well as potential new ridership markets that will emerge as Seattle grows in jobs and new residents
  • Assigning transit modes—such as bus rapid transit, light rail, or street car—that would work best on those corridors
  • Integrating transit capital facilities and services with walking and biking infrastructure, and using transit to make great places
  • Enhancing bus transit performance through roadway investments such as bus bulbs and traffic signal priority
  • Coordinating with Metro and Sound Transit to create a seamless, fully integrated, and user friendly network of transit services

TMP open house dates and locations:

  • 10/18: Seattle Vocational Institute (2120 S. Jackson St.)
  • 10/25: Aljoya at Thornton Creek (450 NE 100th St.)
  • 10/26: West Seattle Eagles Hall (4426 California Ave. SW)
  • 11/15: Ballard High School (1418 NW 65th St.)
  • 11/17: New Holly Gathering Hall (7054 32nd Ave S.)

Each meeting will run from 6 to 8 pm and cover the same information.

For more information, contact SDOT Transportation Planner Allison Schwartz (206.386.4654/allison.schwartz@seattle.gov).

Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – the Seward Park Audubon Center:

Seward Park Audubon Center is part of National Audubon Society’s vision to make conservation the path to a better future by building a constituency as diverse as nature to help protect nature. The Center’s mission is to inspire exploration, discovery, and stewardship of the natural world through science education and direct experiences that promote healthy, sustainable communities.

Since opening in Spring 2008, the Center has served more than 40,000 people, removed 70,000 square feet of invasive ivy from the old growth forest at Seward Park, and provided a 65% scholarship rate to high schools.

The goal of the Seward Park Audubon Center is to develop the future generation of conservation leaders by taking people on a path of ecology education and science literacy leading to conservation action.

Programs include:

  • Preschoolers to first graders meet the Talking Tree and explore how they can help trees survive in the urban environment.
  • Toddler Tales & Trails uses story time and outdoor adventures to introduce toddlers to the wonders of nature year round.
  • Seward Park Audubon Center focuses on providing ecology education to middle and high school age students. For schools not able to take a field trip to the park, classroom visits by Center naturalists bring the experiential curriculum to the school with programs focused on climate change, Trial of a Tree, Owl Ecology, and Fish Morphology.
  • Summer camp helps 9-14 year olds connect with the natural world during an intensive weeklong experience that includes kayaking, entomology, water ecology, and much more. Scholarships are provided to all who ask.
  • Field investigations and restoration research help immerse college students in science learning and provides useful information for long-term studies of the park.
  • Community dinners and full moon walks are a fun way for all ages to share a meal with neighbors and explore the park safely at night. Monthly owl prowls include pellet dissection and a hike deep into the forest.
  • Super Saturdays provide free activities for all ages and cover a wide range of nature themes including the science of snow and scatology. During monthly bird classes, people learn to spot and identify birds in Seward Park.
  • Seasonal bat programs have helped identify the different species that live in Seward Park. Free guided nature walks through the old growth forest of Seward Park are offered two Saturdays a month.
  • Restoration – The ultimate goal is to move people along the path towards conservation and create a community that not only cares about nature, but embraces the role of good stewards of nature. The Center hosts habitat restoration and trail building events for the community, school and youth groups, businesses and organizations to improve and sustain the ecosystems of Seward Park.

Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – Jazz Night School in Columbia City:

In just three years, Jazz Night School has gone from a small, neighborhood music school to a thriving, busy jazz community, where musicians of all ages and skill levels come together to share the music they love. Located in a comfortable home in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood, Jazz Night School provides a friendly and supportive environment for aspiring musicians to learn about jazz and to gain experience playing with an ensemble.

Under the supportive guidance of professional musicians from the regional jazz community, students have an array of growth opportunities, from studying ear training and theory to working with an ensemble and performing live. At Jazz Night School, there is truly something for any aspiring musician.

The school’s motto is: “Learn. Play jazz. Make progress. Have fun.”

At the hub of the activity is the school’s passionate director and founder Erik Hanson. Hanson, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, could easily be considered a musical jack-of-all-trades. He is a pianist, an arranger, a composer, a bandleader, a producer and an educator. With drive and dedication, he set out to create a welcoming space where people could not only learn about and play jazz but could also connect over a shared passion for the music.

“I want everyone who comes to Jazz Night School to have fun, learn and make music,” he says.

Hanson and his wife Debra slowly transformed their home into a fully functional studio with three rooms, three pianos, drums sets and sound equipment. On any given night, the space is abuzz with music and activity: vocalists running through standards, funk ensembles rehearsing arrangements and small combos improvising over swing tunes and Bossa Novas. Jazz Night School is, to say the least, a happening scene.

In addition to ensembles and classes, Jazz Night School offers summer camps and specialized workshops. Coming up next are the following:

Up-Beat Girls Jazz Camp – For all instruments & vocalists, Grades 6-12 (Aug 8 – 12, 9:30 am -3 pm)

Jazz Night School is hosting a great opportunity for girls to jump into jazz or get ahead with their music. Girls will have fun, develop self-confidence, and learn improvisation skills and ensemble techniques in an empowering, intensive one-week day camp. No previous jazz experience needed! Prerequisites: Some basic proficiency and the desire to have fun working on jazz skills with other young women. Tuition is $350. Payment plans, limited scholarships, and “Bring a Friend” discounts available. Camp includes jazz combo playing, workshops, jam sessions with jazz big sisters, history, instrument switching, and performance on Friday!

Fall Session Starts September 19th

Ten weeks of learning and fun, ending with performances at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center—Small Jazz Ensembles, Big Bands, Funk Ensemble, Reggae/Ska Ensemble, Free Improv Ensemble, Singing with Jazz Trio, Standards for Vocalists, Improv Workout, Ear Training, Jazz Harmony, and Instrumental Labs!

Your RVP is proud to announce our newest sponsor – Dani Weiss Photography:

Professional photography isn’t about gimmicks or tricks – like anything wonderful, it is a mix of talent, hard work, and experience. I seek constantly to be open to people and moments, to see the details that others might miss, and to reveal the essence of my subjects in a way that is open, honest, and fun.

Twenty-four amazing years behind the lens has taught me a lot, making me more professional and better equipped to photograph the complexities of big events and little moments. I am a clear and straightforward communicator with the ability to know when to be where during an event. I have captured the look and feel of over 600 weddings and events, creating great art that showcases real people in their most precious times.

Shooting wedding and commitment ceremonies, bar and bat mitzvah’s, as well as world travel, has given me a sensitivity to differing cultures, rituals and events that carry over to my portraits, pet photography, and even corporate work. Mixing a documentary journalistic style with fashion while including more traditional coverage ensures my images are both timeless and contemporary.

As a business-woman living in the most diverse zip code in the USA, 98118, I am also active in The Greater Seattle Business Association, The Seattle Professional Photographers Association and The Rainier Chamber of Commerce.
