MT. BAKER – Bedtime is pajama time and for most families, this is special, even sacred.  There’s a routine involved and maybe a story or two.  ALL kids – including foster kids – should be able to share in this pajama ritual.

Well, one Rainier Valley organization and its supporters are seeing to that.

Earlier this month, One Eighty and Leisure Care retirement communities throughout the Puget Sound collected more than 1,000 pajamas and more than$2,000 in donations for the Treehouse Wearhouse in Southeast Seattle – the free store where more than 5,000+ foster kids are able to shop for much-needed items including clothing, school supplies, books, toys and more.

A handful of Leisure Care retirement communities throughout the Puget Sound participated in the 8th annual One Eighty/Leisure Care Pajama Drive as “Pajama Post” drop-off locations for new and gently used pajamas.

The pajama drive started eight years ago, when two One Eighty/Leisure Care employees volunteered for a day at the Wearhouse. After stumbling on some pajamas in the back room, they hung them on a rack in the store. Within moments, the PJs were spoken for by grateful foster parents who asked if there were more hiding in the back. There weren’t. One Eighty/Leisure Care’s annual Pajama Drive was born that day with the mission to ensure every foster kid who wants pajamas will have them.

Including the 2011 drive, One Eighty/Leisure Care has collected over 5,000 pajamas for Treehouse over the last few years. Photo/Treehouse

MT. BAKER – Bradner Gardens Park is gearing up to host its annual Halloween party on Sun., Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 pm.

The fun, free neighborhood event will feature an old-fashioned manual apple press, so bring your pre-washed apples (a few worm-holes are fine), as well as a juice cup and container. There will also be a giant Halloween cake for everyone to enjoy.

Guests are encouraged to come in costume and let the kids wander around the magical garden and gather treats.

The annual Halloween party is a collaboration between Bradner Gardens Park and Mount Baker Preschool.

Bike Works, Columbia City’s nonprofit bike shop and youth bicycle education organization, will hold its 15th annual Kids’ Bike Swap on Sat., May 7, from 10 am – 4 pm at Genesee Playfield (43rd Ave. S. and S. Genesee St.).

This annual event is an opportunity for families to trade in a bike their child has outgrown for a larger bike – just in time for the summer riding season! The Kid’s Bike Swap helps to facilitate the flow of affordable bicycles within the community and keeps fully functional bikes out of our local landfills. This year, Bike Works has overhauled over 145 kids’ bikes to kick-off the swap!

How it Works: At the swap, each bike that is brought to be swapped is assigned a trade value, which can then be applied towards a “new” bike. If the chosen bike’s value exceeds that of the trade value the “customer” is responsible for the difference. Typically, when a bike is exchanged, the “customer” is able to take home a newly recycled ride for $12 or less.  Families looking to buy a bike, who do not have a bike to trade in, are welcome to come after 12 pm.

This year’s Swap also provides an opportunity for the community to meet Bike Works’ new Executive Director, Deb Salls.

“I am excited to meet the families that have been supporting this event for the last 15 years,” said Salls. “This event is in perfect alignment with our mission and vision – making bikes assessable and affordable in an environmentally friendly way.”

Seattle Children’s will fit free bike helmets and provide education on bicycle helmet safety. There will also be a “Family Bike” expo, with examples of different bikes and trailers that allow families to be car free.

MathFest09-187We’ve all seen the headlines – America is falling behind.  Students in Washington State are less educated than ever before and everyone from major news outlets to education pundits and politicians are weighing in on where we went wrong in our education system.

According to the Washington Office of the Superintendent, more than 40 percent of elementary school students today are failing at math as evidenced by state standardized test scores. In economically challenged communities like the Rainier Valley, this number is as high as 75 percent.

One south Seattle non-profit is working to transform attitudes about math early on and build a sustainable math culture with the goal of reversing those downward trends.

This Thur., Nov. 4, Explorations in Math will host its 5th annual MathFest from 5 to 8 pm at the Rainier Community Center (4600 38th Ave. S.) in Columbia City. The celebration of math will bring together more than 1,000 elementary-age students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members to help kids build confidence in and enthusiasm for math through interactive games in a carnival-like setting.

“In the 21st century, every child will need math and problem-solving skills to be successful – yet too many kids are deciding too early to give up on math,” said Stephanie Cherrington, Executive Director of Explorations in Math. “MathFest vividly demonstrates our mission in action by showcasing math in ways that are fun, engaging and relevant so that all students can learn to conquer math. Much  work needs to be done to make success in math as natural and expected as the ability to read.”

According to Cherrington, MathFest is the only event of its kind that provides elementary school students, parents, teachers and the community with hands-on opportunities to explore and celebrate math achievements in a festive setting. Students can engage in more than 20 interactive math-oriented games such as “Shut the Box,” where they practice addition and “Frog Jump,” in which they measure the distance traveled by tiny plastic frogs, among many others.

Launched in 2007 and first started by a grassroots group of parents dedicated to improving math education, Explorations in Math partners with 22 public and private elementary schools throughout the Puget Sound that reach roughly 7,000 students during the school year.  Its mission is to create a math culture designed to help students succeed in math so they are better prepared to succeed in life.

Explorations in Math takes a holistic approach to math education both inside and outside the classroom through a variety of programs that reinforce and teach math skills and concepts – including after-school math clubs, summer math camps, family math nights, community-wide math events as well as partnerships with out-of-school providers.
