Blues Bring Big Week to Boeing Field

When the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron takes to the air over Lake Washington each summer for the Seafair air show, thousands of spectators marvel at the precision of their airborne maneuvers.

But, the split-second timing and attention to detail are not just limited to the skies. Similar logistics are happening on the ground at King County International Airport (KCIA) at Boeing Field, where the Blues are headquartered for their annual Seafair visit.

“This is a busy time for us each year,” KCIA Operations Manager Chris Hall. “Just hosting the Blue Angels for their practices and performances adds more than 100 takeoffs and landings in a single week at Boeing Field.”

Hall said in addition to the Blue Angels, other performers in the annual air show also increase traffic at Boeing Field during Seafair Week. This year, many civilian aviation performers have opted to participate in a show in Wisconsin, so the Key Bank Air Show at Seafair will feature more military planes – some of which are locally stationed at either McChord Air Force Base or NAS Whidbey. My poor pets have been sweltering in this heat…and now the noise that terrifies them on an annual basis. Wish we could all “get outta Dodge.”

Heat, hydros, blue angels — it’s summer in Seattle : )

One question I hope someone can answer: We’ve had all these reports of poor air quality because of our recent heatwave. What type of impact do the Blue Angels have on Air Quality?

Got it out for the airshow, eh? Personally I’d make try to make an argument that the noise interrupts the salmon breeding cycle or some damned thing. You’d get further, but the angels would still be howlin’ nevertheless.

The air quality is more adversely affected by the zillions of cars piled up on the freeway because of the one or two overheated vehicles, than by the highly refined jet fuel emissions of 4-5 jets flyin’ around for a couple days.

I have two kids, and when the jets fly DIRECTLY over my home one starts running around in circles screaming “THE PLANE, THE PLANE” like some kind of Tatoo, Fantasy Island revival. The other starts screaming bloody murder as if someone is trying to pull her arms off. It really couldn’t get more disturbing, but I still love it. We’ll survive people, when else do 300,000 people converge to get butt a** drunk and party. In some places, this is considered fun.

Chill, have a marg, give one to the dog and give in to the fun it can be if you just surrender to the fact you can’t beat ‘em, so friggin’ join ‘em.

Gotta go, its about beer o clock for me today…

Ahow,

No need for snark. I am asking a legitimate question. The news media has had several stories about air quality issues related to the hot weather. For example, see:

http://www.issaquahpress.com/2009/07/29/ozone-pollution-caused-by-persistent-heat-this-week-may-create-health-risks/

And from the Seattle PI:

“Meanwhile, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is predicting increased ground-level ozone pollution – smog – because of the high temperatures, especially in the Cascade foothills. For updates on the smog and air quality forecasts, go to http://www.pscleanair.org.

Smog can cause breathing, heart and immune system problems.”

Sorry Rob, sounded snarky eh? Blame it on the heat. Or the 5 jets extra jets flying within a couple miles of SeaTac.

In regard to environmental pollution, I’d worry more about the cars in our neighborhood that burn gas/oil at a higher rate than average.

In regard to noise pollution, I’d worry more about the noise pollution created by people hanging out creating trouble at Rainier & Henderson, Wabash, Rose, and Orcus than the blue angels.

The Blue Angels are AWESOME!!! Embrace them, enjoy them, and listen to the sound of FREEDOM!!!
