Run Don’t Walk to Dahlak Where the Eritrean Food Is Close-Your-Eyes-&-Sigh Good

dahlak2This just in from Mt. Baker neighbor Lauren Milan:

I don’t write reviews, good or bad. Ever. But then we found Dahlak and had so many delicious, wonderful meals there that I simply must share the good news.

Now, if it’s stellar ambiance you’re after, or an American restaurant-like experience, Dahlak may disappoint. It’s homey, to say the least. Relax, let yourself be transported by the exotic décor, accept an offer of hot tea from the kind owners and explore their wonderful menu.

Eritrean food is wonderful for vegetarian and carnivorous eaters alike. No meat-eater’s meal is complete without tibsi. The chicken is also delicious, the bone-in lamb incredible, and though we’ve never been adventurous enough to sample it, there is a raw meat dish that’s supposed to be outstanding.

The vegetarian platter will allow you to sample what we feel is heaven in the mouth: gorgeously prepared shiros (legume-based stews), savory greens, and a delectable cabbage dish that leave your mouth singing; this is close-your-eyes-and-sigh good eating. The injera defines Ethiopean/Eritrean food, and it is perfect here.

NOTE: Dahlak cooks everything fresh, the moment you order it, so DO NOT GO WITH HUNGRY CHILDREN and expect to be eating in 5 minutes. We suggest calling ahead to order; the food will be ready by the time your arrive (about 20 minutes for most things), and you’ll sit down to one of the best meals of your life. Or, do as we often do and order to-go.

Dahlak Eritrean Cuisine is located at 2007 South State Street tucked between Oh Boy Oberto and Steward Lumber on Rainier Ave just south of I-90. It’s easy to miss, but take a closer look and you’ll find a building nestled between with a parking lot fronting Rainier. Photo/do communications, inc.

Oooh, I’ve wondered about this place! My list of places I want to check out down here just keeps getting longer.

I love the atmosphere at Dahlak. The mirrored walls give you a hint about the former use of the building…

@Maria: That is exactly what has kept me from eating there! Gonna have to bite the bullet and try it out anyway…

Went there last night, the food was tasty but there definetly could have been more lamb (it was on the bone and not much there but very moist and flavorful) but they do pour a good stiff drink.
