A fun day was had by all on Sat., Feb. 21, when Mayor Greg Nickels came down south to honor the winners of a citywide students art contest commemorating Seattle’s 15th annual Neighbor Appreciation Day.

This year, Dunlap Elementary School in Rainier Beach swept the contest with a total five awards, including first-place winner Gerald Tolentino (5th Grade), second-place winner Claudia Pharr (4th Grade), third-place winner Estifanos Asmare (5th Grade), and runner-ups Trang Tran (3rd Grade) and Thuy Luu (4th Grade).

The celebration took place at Rainier Community Center where city employees flipped pancakes for the crowd of about 60 proud parents, student artists and community members, and a local band played live music.

“Neighbor Appreciation Day is a great time to celebrate volunteerism in our community,” said Mayor Nickels. “The annual art contest is especially fun because it gives us the opportunity to see our neighborhoods through the eyes of our kids and their artistic imagination.”

Winners’ artwork is available on Neighbor Appreciation Day postcards, distributed free at libraries, community centers and Neighborhood Service Centers like the one at 3815 S. Othello near Martin Luther King, Jr. Way in the Rainier Valley.

Congratulations to all of Dunlap’s talented student artists and especially their art teacher, Ms. Donna Amira (above right).
