With more than $25,000 in donations rolling in since the community learned of last week’s theft at Rainier Valley Food Bank, director Sam Osborne told the P-I that “the silver lining far outshines the heinousness of the crime.”
The donations came after more than 30 crates of food were stolen from the food bank Wednesday – just days before its annual Thanksgiving shopping event. More than 500 customers are expected to shop at the food bank for their families’ Thanksgiving meal today.
As a result of generous donations from across the community, Osborne says all of its customers will be able to feed their families this Thanksgiving.
“From Walmart’s generous donation to a mother who brought her two children in to donate all the money from their piggybanks, the community’s response has been staggering,” he said.
Donations include $10,000 in donated food from Walmart, $7,000 from United Way, $5,000 from Money Tree, $1,000 from Columbia City Bakery, $1,000 in donated food from PCC Natural Markets, $1,000 from Rainier Valley Rotary Club, and an upgraded security system from Burdick’s Security, Inc. in Columbia City. Yo, way to take care of business RV.
It’s nice to see the businesses that donated also.
I’m especially moved that the Columbia City Bakery donated $1,000. They are a small business, and to see that generosity warms my heart. Well done.
I also know there are hundreds of people who were up at 6am this morning to volunteer their time. Another fantastic way for us to care for our neighbors.
Wow, what a wonderful, heart-warming story.
This is wonderful. I agree with pds that a $1,000 from a small business like Columbia City Bakery is impressive….but everyone’s contributions are impressive. Well Done!
Heart warming community rally. Thank you everybody who chipped in, large and small.
Tears in my eyes!
say what you will about walmart, but you know for a big store like to give to give a seattle food bank that generous amount is great. there isn’t even a walmart in the seattle city limits. and high five to all! way to go community!
well, Gen, that’s why walmart is giving so much money they want IN to Seattle. I appreciate the fact that they made a donation, but with a business like that it’s hard for me to find purity in their motives.
