Seattle Times (RVP news partner):
About 450 people are expected Saturday at the Rainier Valley Food Bank to get food for Thanksgiving meals. But when staff arrived Wednesday at 6 a.m., they found the lock on the storage container had been cut and nearly everything inside had been stolen.
Burglars took several hundred pounds of potatoes and onions, as well as 30 crates of canned fruit, soup, chips, peanut butter and vegetables that volunteers collected last weekend. The loss totaled $1,500 to $2,000, said Sam Osborne, the food bank’s executive director.
“I’m scrambling to replace all of it, because it was intended to be distributed on Saturday for our Thanksgiving distribution,” Osborne said. Read more.

Stay classy, RV.
This is such a bummer. I would imagine at this point (Thanksgiving’s days away), they could just use the cash. I mean, if everyone shows up with potatoes, what are they gonna do? Thanks, RVP for the link to their site to Donate Cash…
Can a better security system be donated?
That sucks, when I was at Safeway last weekend there were some volunteers at the door, they gave me a list of items that the food bank needed and I bought some stuff for them and now some Ahole rips it off.
Not cool
Life among the ghetto sewer rats. Its all in a days work.

It makes me feel so sad knowing the desperation of the individual(s) who stole food from the food bank, but also anger that they put themselves first in front of 10,000 needy RVFB clients. I’m totally donating on their website.
This is so sad. I usually ride the 7 on Saturday and it’s filled with people going to or from the food bank. They’re old and poor and the food they receive is a godsend to them. I’ve heard recipients talk amongst themselves about what food they got that day and others on their way, asking what’s available. I’m impressed with the food given to them and now I’m outraged that some SOB would dare rob that place. I don’t usually wish ill on others, but I hope they choke on a turkey bone.
Btw, Laurel, you’re a piece of work. Ghetto rats, huh? Speak for yourself.
not to mention that the thieves will probably waste most of the food. What a sad world.
I wonder what they will do with all that perishable food? I have a small hope that it will in some way get distributed to people who need it but this is probably being way, way too idealistic.
I heard that Cafe Vita near the PCC is doing a food drive for the Food Bank. Drop of canned goods, etc. there.
Thanks, Solvay Girl. I’m right now working on an update of all the places in the RV that folks can drop off donations today, so please don’t hesitate to LMK if anyone knows of any other options. Thanks!
Tremendous Offer from Tutta Bella:
Tutta Bella will be hosting an emergency food drive, today through Saturday November 21st, to help replenish the shelves. Please bring your gift of non-perishable food to the Columbia City location. In return, you’ll receive a “Free Espresso” beverage card. A list of preferred items has been listed on the food bank’s website:[http://rvfb.org/action.html#food]
Tutta Bella is located at 4918 Rainier Ave S, and will be open 6:00 am -11:00 pm on Friday and 8:00 am-11:00 am on Saturday.
I think Columbia City Bakery is also doing something.
Human beings are essentially the same as animals if they do not follow a spiritual path that teaches them how to rise above the animal mind. They are driven and owned by their base animal instincts. This is how these things happen.
It is not sad or good or bad or terrible, it’s just the way it is. You don’t stand in the way of a tree in the forest when it falls, because you know you won’t change the tree. Work around it and move on.
Keep an eye on that Laurel.
